Kingston Messabout Site depth soundings
Someone (Oops! sorry, in my zeal to keep my hotmail address open,
I've deleted it before replying.) emailed me re: water depths and
weeds at the Kingston Messabout site for September 5, 6, and 7, this
fall.
We just got back from taking lead line soundings all around the docks
there and the results are in.
Of the concrete seawall dock, 4 feet near shore on the outside
increasing to almost 6 at the tip of the dock, On the inside 3"
adjacent to the launch ramp deepening to 5' at the tip.
Off the finger docks in the centre of the dock area. 2 feet near the
shore changing to 3 and 4 at the far end.
Off the easternmost long single dock 2' slowly changing to 3 near the
deep end. This dock is where we'll moor TIMS, it only draws 1 inch
(unless Peter Lenhan and I are onboard at the same time, with all the
beer, in which case it draws 3 inches!) and my houseboat Adagio,
which is also pretty shallow draft, 8 inches with the motor up or 24
with it down.
Bottom all over the harour area appears to be sand.
To enter the dock area stay in the main Rideau Canal Chanel until
you're abreast of the channel bouys north of the campgrounds harbour
and then head straight in to the bay.
We observed and photoed numerous I/O runabouts drawing 2-3 feet
moored there and arriving with no problem.
Yes, it's weedy. Not much to do about that. Shallow bays on most
fresh water canals are weedy. I imagine that September's shorter days
and lower light levels will reduce their effect, but not as much as
throwing your mill in reverse for a second or two will.
CAUTION: The pass between the little island and the shore is very
shallow and has low rising rocks (that are hard to see unless a flock
of seagulls is standing on it), this chanel is for canoes or boat
wreckers, ONLY!
The beach to the south of the docks is sand, rapidly shoaling to 3
feet, and then I gave up wading. It's more than sufficient for
launching and recovering small craft.
So, I suggest, it'll be fine!
See you all there!

TIMS units already constructed and/or committed add up to 46 feet,
not too bad on a 4 foot beam. Additional units welcome.
