Re: Fotation foam recommendations?

Kellan,

Don't use under-platform flotation on a Bolger Cartopper! Repeat,
don't use under-platform flotation on a Bolger Cartopper!

It'll act like the opposite of a keel, wanting to push up from
centerline. The result is that when swamped she will slowly but
stubbornly TURN TURTLE, instead of lying docilly on her side.

I speak from experience. You'll have to pull the stick while she is
fully upside down, while hoping there's enough water under you not to
jam the stick.

Even after you get the stick out she still won't float on an even
keel. You might get her there momentarily, but any perturbation will
send one gunwale or the other under water. When you try to board
she'll turn turtle again. In deep water you won't be able to get in
her at all (from sides, bow or stern) because she wants to float
upside down when full of water, and you won't be able to bail from
outside because of that gunwale in the water!

My brother learned this from hard experience (he was the one in the
water, while I sailed circles around him offering "advice.")

Best solution I can think of, a small amount of flotation under the
foresheets, and a sheet of flotation, port and starboard, attached to
the side panels aft of the platform (maybe even seat cushions
attached with cleats).

Fully swamped, my Cartoppers float (no stick but otherwise fully
loaded, except for folks) gunwale just above water level. To bail, it
is theoritically possible to lie down and float, inside the boat,
using the water to support your weight so the boat floats clear. Wear
one PFD, strap another to your butt, hope the beer is tied off, and
start sloshing!

For something like the noodles, I think you might be looking for this....

Harry,

I love the noodle idea, and that's exactly the kind of foam I'm
looking for, but I'm hoping to find something in sheets that I can
cut to shape and sew into cushions.

Hi,

Last week I capsized my Cartopper only to learn that it doesn't have
enough flotation to bail out. The bow and stern were high and dry,
but the Cartopper has so much sheer that the gunwales dipped
underwater.

So I need to add flotation.

I used floor slats, rather than the ply platform specified in the
plans. It will be simple put a block of foam down low.

The Cartopper doesn't have thwarts and seats, you sit on a low floor
platform and lean against the sides. Since I use cusions to lean
against anyway, I thought some firmly attached cushions in the
cocpit area would also be an excellent source of bouyancy.

Can anyone recommend a type and source of semi-rigid closed-cell
foam? Something like the stuff they use in throwable float/cushions
would be ideal.

Thanks,
Kellan
