Well, half kidding.

Yes, I do have a pair of slide rules, but the 70s are really fuzzy
too!

Speak for yourself, for me, the 70s are still knda fuzzy, especially
the details.

Bruce is kidding. He and I both have slide rules squirrelled away in case Sadam drops that nuke on us and the EMP fries all our computers

As PCB's book "Small Boats" was published June 1973, it is not
unlikely for him to recommend that a slide rule be used to perform the
conversion. He wrote the book in the slide rule's midnight hour.

Come on, most of the posters here are old enough to remember the 60s
and 70s. Don't y'all know how to find roots to any base with the slide
rule you have jammed away in your drawer (closet, garage, attic)?

Peter,
Perhaps,in between the lines,Bolger was/is also forecasting some
as yet unthinkable melt-down occuring withing the whole micro-
chip/electronic industry as a result of unexpected changes in our
magnetic field due to a) shifting poles or b)spectacular sun spot
activity?
Nothing like having a plan "B" to fall back on when all hell
breaks loose ;-)

sincerely,

Peter Lenihan
2025??? Are you kidding??? My daughter, the Chemical Engineer, saw my 20"
K&E one day and asked what it was. I told that was what we used before
pocket calculators. So she said "show me how to add 2 and 2".

Paul

I was looking over Bolger's first book "Small Boats" the other day.
In the foreword, he has some explanation about the English system for
the supposed reader of the year 2025 who only knows metric. Of
particular interest, he suggests the use of a slide rule to convert
from metric to decimal inches.

Do you think anyone in 2025 is going to remember what a slide rule is
(was) ? Progress sure is difficult to predict.
