$3 per 16 ounces, that is cheap!
!!!
Yes, I agree, that once opened, the
bottle goes hard within a few weeks,
no matter what you do.
Read the instructions carefully
before use, the stuff will *not*
work if the pieces being joined
are not wet, and I mean wet!!!
I usually soak my wood in the
pond, sink, or with a spray bottle
of water before glueing
In my experience, when activated
by water, that glue is *really*
strong, even the 'foamed' glue.
Indeed, the foaming action has
the benefit of filling up some
sloppy joints, that epoxy does
not fill as well.
Any glued joint, epoxy, polyurethane,
or whatever...that 'life depends upon'
should be proof tested somehow
unless you are willing to risk death.
All things considered, epoxy is better,
but often polyurethane is easier and
cheaper and good enough. [in my experience]

Interesting to read of PL glue failure. I noted a Gorilla glue
(similar I think) failure a year or two ago of mine, picture frames.
Lat week, before the recent PL failure, I pulled out my bottle of
Gorilla, to glue some non-structural bits for my new dinghy.
Horrors, the glue in the bottle was solid at the top, liquid in the
middle and solid at the bottom. The bottle was 75% full. Trashed.
This after 6 months sitting with the cap firmly on. I am always
careful about this, even capping it between glueing multiple bits.
I have epoxy 5 years old or more, which still glues perfectly.
