Seriously, checking up on the sales tax at registration time seems quite
intriguing, a right proper Lil ("if the right one don't get ya then the
left one will..."). Doesn't apply here, since wholesale or retail taxes
by law cannot be dodged without a great deal of paper work (and besides,
are now all disappearing to be replaced by a VAT/GST). So when you come
to register your boat - only if it has an engine - you just pay the
small registration fee. Each year. And the boating levy. Each year. Oh
yes, and the emergency services levy. Each year. Er, and the yearly
emergency services levy on its towing vehicle. And...

They make me describe the building process a bit, I think to make sure
that I indeed did build it, rather than buy it and *say* I built it.

Confessions of a tax cheat.
When my Cynthia J. was built, for tax purposes, the builder took the
position that he 'repaired' the wood into a boat. New boats sales were
taxed, but repair services were not. A couple of years later, the boat
registration laws were changed, and I had to register the boat. I had
to pay the sales tax at that time.
Certainly the original point of the thread is valid, which is that any
sales tax you pay on the materials you buy should count to reduce sales
tax you might have to pay at registration.

Freedom is not free, Tim, :-).
If you avoid sales tax, by buying out of state, your evading taxes if you
don't pay up locally. Every time you buy out of a catalog, you're
*supposed* to settle up with your home state. Rarely happens, I know.
Idaho takes its own laws seriously, it seems.

I just finished Micro Trawler and went to register and title the boat
as Idaho is into titling boats now. Two main suppliers were out of
state and I was not charged sales tax. So, a warning to first time
builders of craft big enough to register in states that have sales
tax.(all except Oregon I think)Either pay up front or keep track with
good receipts as mine had to be inspected by the state. I have a
feeling had I not kept them, a formula would have been used and I may
have lost more money. This is something no one warned me about,
probably thought I was smart enough to figure it out. Wrong.
