Re: [bolger] Re: 1958 Out O'Glouscester

Hi Jim,

This is Keith, I originally posted about the O'Glouscester. I ordered the article your refering to and should recieve it sometime next week. I'm looking forward to it.

I'm going out to her tonight (O'Glouscester) and will be with her all weekend cleaning her up.

I'll post some pics as soon as possible.

I wanted to thank you all for your info, I find it very interesting that Mr. Bolger has such a following on the web yet no website. I've learned alot about the father of my during my research.

I feel very honored to have on of the few Out O'Glouscester's. I'm going to take very good care of her and ensure that she is restored to her original glory. Soon I'll come up with a name that suites her.

Thank you all again very much, May the winds bring you safley to a peaceful shore....

Hi Bruce,
Yup, I've got a copy of that issue and sure enough it has a three page
write-up about the "Out O'Gloucester 30"
"designed by the young Philip Bolger". I'll be glad to make copies of
the article and send them out by mail to you
or anyone else who wants them. I'd post them but I think that, at a
resolution to be readable, they'd be too big to
post in the files.

If the conclusion about posting them is in error let me know. Otherwise
please let me know where to mail the copies.
BTW that's a neat publication, isn't it?

along with these other designs:

I'd love to see a copy, some drawings or photos. Does anyone have any?

I remember when the "Out O'Gloucester" line was introduced. They had
some really fine woodwork on them. including a
pair of unusual shaft logs extending out from the bottom of the boat. I
didn't know that PCB was the designer. I don't seem to
remember that the sales were all that great however.

Out O'Gloucester as a phrase would seem to be an attempt to associate
some of the legendary ocean-going atttibutes
of the old Gloucester fishing schooners and their hardy crews with the
foreign built yachts. The name "Gloucester" was
also used on a line of marine paints, I think. The Gorton company in
Gloucester, is currently using the name of the
old fishing port along with photographs of Hollywood actors attempting
to look seamanlike in order to flog their brand
of patent fried fish.

You might find the phrase used in the novel "Captains Corageous" as
well. I don't know whether or not it appears in
"The Reef of Normans Woe". It might though, that sullen rock is
certainly there. I nearly bounced off it one afternoon.

Asking Mr. Bolger directly would be
the easiest.

There is a list of 2/3rds of his
boat designs, here in the Bolger
Yahoo Group database, click the
word 'database' on the Yahoo
Bolger Groups website.

Most are quite obsure, for the
common ones, type the design
name of the boat "_____" and the word
"Bolger" into Google, and you will be
pointed to websites with photos.

Of course, if you own a Bolger boat,
it is your duty <grin> to post photos
of it on the web!
You can get hold of Mr. Bolger through fax or mail, he doesn't have a web
presence and doesn't give out his phone number. His address is tacked on
the bottom of every message on the Bolger forum along with the rules. If
you fax him make sure you include your return fax number.

If you use snail mail a SASE would help.

Greetings,

I recentley found a Glouscester dry docked in Wilmington, CA (Long
Beach). Purchased her and am in the process of restoring her. I am
more of a sailor kind of a guy but when I saw this boat and went
inside I instantly fell in love. Bottom is very dry but we are
refastening and painting hopefully put her back in the water by this
weekend. She is very cleen inside, her name is Ms. Donna. has anyone
ever heard of her? Or does anyone have any info on the '58 33.6' Out
O'Glouscester. They told me she was German but doing some research on
the net I found you guys. Does Philip C. Bolger have a site with
photos of his boats? I haven't been able to find one. I'm searching
for photo's, plans, and any historical data so that I can restore her
properly. I'll keep you all posted since this seems to be the place
for PCB's creations.

Thank you for your time and patience, May fair winds bring you to a
peaceful shore.

Mr. Bolger does not have a website. He publishes every two weeks in
Messing About In Boats (http://www.messingaboutinboats.com/). It
seems to me that he mentioned the Out O'Gloucester design quite
recently.

Does anyone know the origin of the phrase "Out O'Gloucester"? It may
be the title of a poem.

Best of luck with your restoration.

Peter
