Re: [bolger] Re: St Valery

are Resolution, Romp and Yonder. Some others too that I can't
instantly recall, one in BWAOM..
Bob,
The 'St Valery' design was a 'love at first sight' thing for me.
Having just got back from a trip sailing into the festival at Brest
[luggers a-plenty!], my dream of cruising the Breton ports and the
French canal system is rekindled.
A larger boat would be more comfortable, to be sure, but the original
size is more realistically affordable for us [and would perhaps fit
inside a shipping container?]. Waiting for Phil and Suzanne to clear
their current backlog and draw up a new 'big boat' would probably put
the project aways off over the horizon, too.
With your experience I would be _very_ interested in your views on how
to fit out the existing design [or a small re-scaling of same] for the
maximum practical camping/liveaboard. A heat source and wet-locker,
and some weather protection at the helm perhaps? Some ceiling and
insulation?
cheers
Derek

Having some experience with channel luggers from our years in France I
think a full scale up rather than simply stretching it out.
My gut feeling is that in a larger version both the board, rudder and
the ballast would be quite different...Fact is once you get past a
certain size it really becomes a whole different design. A Maxi St
Valery would be a liveaboard/voyager that kicks some serious ass.
The French designer Jean Pierre Tutard ( who has certainly been tarred
with the Bolger brush in a very good
way...http://www.tutard.com/index.php?mod=articles&id=5)Has some
interesting designs as well and I'd love to see how he'd handle a lug
schooner...

up by stretching the stationing.
Then when I got to thinking more, (and after looking at this model):
http://community.webshots.com/album/487095836ybvRmy
I see that St. Valery is in the class of Bolger boats that uses the
rudder for lateral plane. (Like Dart dingy)
I am not sure what stretching length would do to a hull shape with so
much lateral plane on the rudder.
Probably, you would want to increase the size of the centerboard.
Has anyone considered a larger version of the St Valery say in the
forty foot niche? Anyone spoke to Phil & Co about the design?
On another tack the long overdue article on Lug rigs is back on the
"Get to it" list as I have been waiting to hear back from several
designers now at least have all my source material at hand.

I could use a bit of help...Anyone have a PDF file of the Article
about St Valery that they could email me? I'm sitting at anchor in
Anguilla and need it for something I'm writing.
Thanks!

There is an article in Woodenboat #157 (Nov/Dec. 2000). It was
written by PB&F and plugs shoal draft boats in general and St.Valery
and William D. Jochems in particular. There is also a sidebar
sailing review of the prototype St. Valery.

I have seen a few references to a water ballasted
Bolger design called the St Valery, but have not been
able to find any reviews or detailed descriptions.
Any ideas where there might be info, preferably on
line.
