I am the owner of a 28' Trojan built in 1965 with MDO. Structurally it
has held up wonderfully. The only complaint I have about the MDO is
that it has made my work this last month to get a smooth hull while
painting close to impossible. Some previous materials clung to the
paper with the grip of death, others sloughed off snow from a stove. I
didn't have time to take the topsides down to the first wood laminate,
so conseqently I have a bit of a screwy looking boat. Oh well, it is
solid as a rock structurally so what if a little ugly.....??

I laminated all the bulkheads etc. up with it. I had no failures of
the glass tape from the mdo to the hull. I can assure you this boat
was really tested in lake MI. on several occasions. The last trip
down, I was trashed and the boat was fine, including the ply. I
sold her many years ago and all was fine. Brad Raby

Leander,
There has been a lot of discussion about this on the boatbuilding

Hi Leander,
I am currently converting Glen-l's Sweet Caroline to stitch and glue and am
using 1/2" MDO ( Duraply)
for all the planking. It seems better than A/C fir plywood and I have
placed the MDO face on the inside of the boat, fir side out. The fir will
be fiberglass sheathed and the interior epoxy sealed and painted. I am
hoping the MDO will prevent checking of the fir where it is not sheathed.
I'll let you know how it does.
Richard

Has anyone on the list had any experience with a material called Medium
Density Overlay. It is available in this area in 3/8 and 1/2 inch. It
is a very high quality ply with a resin saturated paper coating on both
faces. It is designed for outdoor signs and is reputed to be as water
resistant as Marine Ply. I have come by a couple of sheets of the 3/8
and it seems very good material but it is very wavy and doesn't want to
lay flat. It is also very heavy, similar to BC Yellow Pine. I am
thinking of using it for the bottom of the Folding Schooner. Then again
it might make a nice work bench top.
