I certainly didn't, either -- photos of the quality level that
I'm building her to are available on Bolger3. She isn't worth
$5k, but she wasn't meant to -- she was a "free" boat meant to
tide me over during a period of unemployment.

My Lightning, on the other hand -- now *she'll* be worth $5k,
easily, when I'm done with her. If I ever sold her, which I
don't plan to. 'Course, I need to finish the _Shrike_ (H&HS)
first....

Well, she's not unique any more, since mine exists (though I
haven't had much time to work on her lately). Sorry. :-)

(BTW, did Tony ever build a second boat for Mary, or are ours
the only two?)

Yes, it's true that paying a professional to make you a plywood boat
is in some sense a waste of money, since the labor cost will be so
large a factor in the final bill. Naturally it's impossible to tell
from Maryland, and from one picture, if Tony's boat is far and above
the usual run of plywood efforts.

However, you're there and know best, and I have to applaud you for
helping "preserve" a Bolger boat built to outstanding standards!

One other note about costs with regard to this boat. $5K is
not really a very high price for a boat like this. Start
adding up all the materials costs, factor in even just an
honorarium for all the time and effort it will take to build
one (I know, I built the Light Schooner), and $5K doesn't
look so bad at all. Especially for a boat of this quality.
The sad truth is that most people who build Bolger boats
will never build to this quality level. I didn't. Mine is
competent. Tony Groves' work is in another category
altogether.

And, sure, there are other boats that give you more value
for the dollar. I'm the first to admit it. But how many
of those *other* boats give the same kind of satisfaction as
a lovely, unique boat like this one. None, that's how many.
Intangible value is, of course, in the heart of the
beholder.
