Then we should educate everybody, since with the disappearance of decent
solid timber, lapstrake or plywood planking allows the continued
building of proper curvaceous designs. Gypsy as a case in point. Iain
Oughtred produces gorgeous (and workable) designs for lapstrake ply.

That was the name I was trying to think of. I think he said Spur II IS
a Whitehall.

With all this boat show talk, I was wondering if everyone knew about the
Boat Show sponsored by Wooden Boat Mag. that will be in Mystic Con. the
end of June this summer. Should be great. We attended the one in St
Michaels on the Chesapeake last year. It will also have a family boat
building event. Check into it.

Yes, Whitehalls are traditionally lapstrake. However, the Geodesic
Aerolite "Classic" series are based on the Whitehall, but done in
heat-shunk polyester over a lightweight wooden frame. They are actually
shorter than a traditional Whitehall, but sweet. Check out:
<http://www.geodesicairoliteboats.com/classic12.html>. Also, Glen L
offers a 17' design in fiberglass or strip plank:
<http://www.glen-l.com/designs/canu-row/whitehall.html>. As for Bolger,
Gypsy comes close to a Whitehall in a plywood boat, imho, but Bolger
might scoff at this. See: <http://www.instantboats.com/gypsy.htm>
Concerning for your comments on the Miami boat show, I've been there (in
1997, I think) and I have to agree in general with your opinions.
However, the folks at both the Sailrite (sail kits) and Celestaire
(navigation equipment) booths were helpful and friendly to me at the
time. The Celestaire guy actually let me take a $400 sextant outside to
try to take a noon sight on Biscayne Bay, even after I told him I wasn't
prepared to buy a sextant that day (maybe I just have an honest face). I
would love to get up to the Maine show one of these years. Real boats in
real wood built by real craftspeople--what a concept! I saw a Herreshoff
12 1/2 in Camden, ME, years ago and walked around the thing for an hour.
I couldn't get enough of it....

Actually, I was talking about the one in Boston, but they probably pick
it up and carry it bodily from city to city. DOn't remember if Sailrite
was there, and I don't know anything about sextants, and hope not to
unless I break my cartoppable rule.

The most Whitehall-like of Bolger's plywood boats is Crystal, IMHO. I
think Crystal could be difficult to build to the designed shape, due to
the unusual projection of the bottom panels. Anyone have any experinece?

By-the-way, Jacques Merteens is always suggesting 'Marine Teck
boatbuilding plywood.' Does anyone have an comment on using it in a
Bolger boat?
