rigging the SURF with a small club footed staysail and a jib, a la
BLUEBERRY. I think the a mainsail about the size of the foresail on
the LIGHT SCOONER would be just about right.
Do it and post pictures!

I'm going to try it first. I've just been reading too much about Gaff
rigs lately and I just got "Buehlers Backyard Boatbuilding" in. He's
got a 29'(LOD) schooner that I really like the looks of. Looks like
it might be partially gaff rigged. Anyway, if I ever get started
building it I may try converting the Surf to a gaffer rig, at least
temporarily. Maybe I should do a weekender next then the larger
boat... :) Maybe I should finish the first one before I plan the
third one.
For now it's build it to the plans. Gotta go to the lumberyard today
and pick up some wood for the frames and a couple more sheets of ply.
Guess I should look around for some expoxy as well. Hmm...bet I can't
get that locally.
Anybody left off the fiberglass tape & epoxy on the Teal or Surf?

Try the sharpie sprit sail on the Surf first. I think you will like it. It is so easy to build, set up, take down and repair that you may end up like me - taking perfectly good sloops and converting them to free standing rigs. Life without all that rigging is pleasant indeed and should be enjoyed on any boat that does not live in the water.

Hello all. I'm relatively new to the group. Looking at building a Surf as a first project.
Just got my plans in today. Now I just have to finish up the workbench in the garage
and buy some lumber for the framing and I'll be ready to start.
Actually, I do (sort of) have a question. On the subject of crazy unapproved
modifications to the design - anybody ever rigged a Surf as a gaff rigged sloop?
I'll probably buiild it as per the plans initially but I may try a gaff rig later - I hope to
eventually build a larger cruising boat and most of the designs I've looked at are gaff
rigged.
