[bolger] Re: Robb White's Shop
Robb's shop is just over the line in GA, on the road from Tallahassee FL to
Thomasville GA. I don't recall the exact directions, you have to be looking
for it. We called or wrote him and made an appointment, happened to catch
him on a day when paint was drying on a 16 footer (120 pounds!). I think he
usually discourages drop-ins, even if you could find it. If you don't get
an invitation, just keep reading his letters and articles in MAIB - it's the
same material! The shop is small and rustic, I'd say 24x20, with some
well-used power tools and lots of Japanese pull-saws, planes, clamps, etc.
The only high-tech process is vacuum-bagging each plank in fiberglass/epoxy
to minimize the weight.
He works in the shop in spurts, sleeping over there after commuting from his
home on Dog Island, FL, accessible only by boat. (The 16 footer was his new
personal commuter, an outboard skiff.)
Well worth a visit if you can arrange it, we were just lucky to catch him.
He also builds fine custom millwork like mantels, custom windows, staircase
rails, gun cabinets, etc. These are quite expensive too, for the upscale
homebuilding/renovation market (I'm not in that demograpic either!).
