Hi David,

Mildew usually does not rot out wood. You can get rid of it with a mild bleach solution. I use X-14 bathroom cleaner for mildew.

Fuzzy, damp wood surface is an indication of "wet rot" and vinegar will kill it. (Then coat with a thin coat of epoxy.)

Anti-freeze works with "dry rot" according to David Carnell and I trust what he says.

Reed
Dave Carnell is very persuasive on the merits of
glycol-based antifreeze. The trouble is, without a
control, how do you ever know if it is working? I
recently put borate powder (20 mule team laundy
treatment, actually) in the closed spaces of my Topaz.
Will rot be retarded, compared to untreated spaces?
I'll never know. It is kind of like the old "elephant
repellent" joke--the "repellent" works, as proved by
the absence of elephants.
Which gets me to the real reason for this post,
which is to tell Ed Zern's (one of the funniest
writers of all time, in my opinion) version of this
story:
I saw an old man walking slowly down the street. As
he walked, he would take a handfull of powder from a
sack and broadcast it on the sidewalk around him.
Intrigued, I approached the old fellow. "What are you
doing there, old timer?" I asked. He gave me a look.
"This here is tiger repellent." the old man said
"It keeps away the tigers." I smiled
"There are no tigers around here, mister" I told
him.
"Huh" the old man said "and a good thing, too.
This stuff is not worth a damn."
Good luck with the glycol. Sam

That sounds like Dave Carnell's territory. You might check on his

FBBB,

A week before I left for Kenya I swamped the Margaret Ellen. Then the
guy who "rescued" me dragged us over a submerged rock cracking the
topsides between the middle frames. Last thing I did before heading
for the plane was drag her back home for a dry out and refit. I
pleased to say that the repair to the topsides has gone smoothly. I
figured since the one side had to be sanded and repainted to hide the
repair, I might as well grind the whole thing and paint her up nice.

While grinding the floors of the cockpit, I noticed a little mildew
on the surface of the wood. Probably in time it would eat out the
floor (although pieces of plywood of similar vintage moldering in my
yard are still sound.) Would it hurt anything to slop some Prestone
on the sole before painting again? If it wouldn't hurt, would it help?

She's going to look nice when she's all fixed up. I've got some
"real" sails that look real smart, and my wife got me a 1st Naval
Jack; that's the candy stripe Don't Tread On Me flag. I'm going to
tack it on the leech of the main the next time we sail.

YIBB,

David
