I'm still with you, on cutting down the oak tree, Steve, But at 6600
pounds of wheel weights, I draw the line! ;-)

It's called an AS39, perhaps. Clyde

Hello Steve Yahn,
It may be worth keeping in mind that,of all the things that make
the MICRO"so good a boat"it is it's diminutive size that usually wins
peoples hearts if not their wallets. At least that is how this smitten
owner/builder of a MICRO feels.
Sincerely,

Peter Lenihan, already feeling the warmth of the ever lenghtening
days, despite the snow,on the ice sheathed shores of the

It means that if you "inflate" a design with a linear scale of X, then,
if you want to mantain all its relative proportions, the displacement
goes up X^3 times. Linear dimension (lenghts, thicknesses) are scaled
by X, areas by X^2, volumes (and weights) by X^3. This means that if
X=2.5, such an inflated Micro would displace about 25800 pounds, and
the ballast should be about 6600 pounds... The mast should be 60 ft
tall, sail area shound be more than 1000 sq.ft., plywood thickness 1",
etc... What a monster!

Best, Pippo
I don't know about the cube square law but,
the cost, weight and time to build a boat increase
proportionaly to the lenght cubed. So a 16 footer costs
8 times as much as a 8 footer.

This only applies when you buy or build a boat. When
you sell the boat the price is proprotional to the length:)

Scaling a boat is non-trivial, cube square law and all that.

Wow, a 36' Micro; now there is a thread I can get on! At last, the
entire Bolger egroup would have a place to meet and party down. The 10'+
head room in the cabin would allow for a high wire act during the party.
As soon as the weather breaks, I'll get out my az and draw knife out and
get started on the 100' oak tree on my front lawn for the unstayed mast.
Now all we have to figure is where to round up 1125 pounds of wheel
weights. Do you realize if we doubled the size again, we could make
history. We start out by getting two of each kind of animal...... Does
any one know the formula for converting to cubits?

I suspect the motion inside would be rolly.
Any thoughts?
