Re: [bolger] Chebacco 20 ideas - engine size?
Re Chebacco engine size.
My father's Chebacco 20,"Grebe" (Ply stitch & tape version), preformed very well under power with a 2-stroke Twin cylinder Mercury 6HP outboard until some kind person decided they would like a new motor and removed it from her transom one night.! Luckily we had a Mercury 2.5HP that was OK while waiting to get a new motor. The 2.5HP pushed her along quite well, even against the tide and wind, but obviously not as well as the 6HP.The 2.5 also came into play one day when we had trouble with the diesel inboard's fuel system on "Beluga"(30' "Romp" Design -Different Boats Book). Using "Beluga"'s tender, an "Elegant Punt" lashed alongside with the 2.5 on full throttle, with somebody in the dinghy to stop it from cavitating we were able to slowly push against a fairly slack tide to get back to the mooring a mile or two up stream. We couldn't sail as it was low tide and even with "Beluga"'s shoal draft we didn't have enough room to manouver,so the little 2.5 saved us some time and hassle! Not
bad for a 2.5HP 2 stroke Outboard to move a 4 Ton Boat!!
