Re: rowing seat/ditty box
Hi Hal, In practice I found the loose rowing seat to be a pain. After
getting myself dumped a few times I put in a fixed thwart that was
just pinned so it could be lifted off and stored. A fixed seat works
better generally for rowing.

Though Chris suggested stowing
the oars in the oarlocks which
also seems perfectly sensible.
When you sail, you want to
keep your body weight low
down. A seat that could be
colapsed, or folded up when
not in use, would be an asset,
in the tight space of a Teal.

they feel on my Teal, either with my cooler or with the Payson rowing
seat. They're about right for me in my Gull.
The biggest trouble I get into rowing (Teal or Gull) is when I wear a
baggy t-shirt. The ends of the oars get tangled up in the fabric.
I've taken to wearing a surfer's rash guard, which is a t-shirt made
from heavy lycra. Keeps the sun off, doesn't have a cooling effect
when wet (cotton does), and doesn't tangle in the oars. I also have a
kayaker's 'squirt vest', a pull-over type III PFD that isn't nearly
as bulky as other sailing/rafting PFDs. One less excuse not to wear
it.
If you have something shorter, give 'em a try in the Teal -- you
might like it. If not, don't sweat it. I had all sort of
misadventures in my Teal with the seven foot oars, including rowing
up to a mile out into the open Atlantic chasing fish and my famous
'round the point trip. In neither case would short oars kept me out
of trouble.

David

Thanks David & Ron. I will try to find the correct
size cooler. baring that I will make a Michalak
ditty box, which was what I was looking for.
BTW David, Michalak says a bar through the
oar locks should be at belly button height. Is
that about right for a Teal? I have 7 foot oars
I hope that is close.

I need to make a rowing seat for my teal. Somewhere I
saw a ditty box that doubled as a rowing seat. Anybody
have a clue?
