Re: Mizzen flutter
Boy Greg - you certainly have equipment AND the know-how to do some
sail cutting yourself! You could launch a spinoff.

I've read that blue water cruisers will cut a hollow leach into thier
"production sails" as part of thier voyage preparations. My sailrite
cut sail has a hollow leech - I love that sail! (the opposite is
called a roach).

Right - the leech should have some hollow - maybe 1/2" or 1". If you
have battens support a roach, there should be hollow between batten
ends. A leech line to tension it as it stretches is a good idea.
I would just recut the leech, otherwise the cloth will unravel.

have battens support a roach, there should be hollow between batten
ends. A leech line to tension it as it stretches is a good idea.
I would just recut the leech, otherwise the cloth will unravel.

Hi Richard
I have a flutter in the mizzen too. I cut the leech straight, and
now it has stretched a bit and the edge flutters -- I think it is
probably less noticeable when the sail is fuller because the curve
puts more tension on the edge, reducing the flutter.
I guess the sail should have had some concatenary (reverse) curve in
the leech when cut so this wouldn't happen. However, it doesn't make
any difference in performance, so I just ignore it.

PS In regards to Chebacco motors, I swear by my 5 hp Honda four
stroke, with remote gas tank. Only problem I've had was with the
starter rope return, and that was temporarily fixed by taking off the
engine cover and using a wrap-around cord. Not bad for a 15+ year
old engine.

As to the mizzen flutter,I used to get that on my MICRO until I
learned to keep her snotter hauled in tight for a really flat sail,à
la windvane. Also,my mizzen boomsprit has a snap shackle to hold the
sail more or less centered on the boom sprit and not twisting from
being hooked onto one side of the boomsprit. The mainsail, however, has
a small line sewn into the leach and ties off in a very small jam
cleat sewn to the leach, which I can tighten up on as the sail ages
and begins to lose her perfect brand-new shape. Perhaps a similar
line couild be sewn into your mizzen?

I always move the sprit from one side to the other when I am going to
be on one tack for more than a few minutes - and unless I sheet it in
too far it flutters a bit anyhow - the main also. I just don't pay
any attention to it any more. It's sort of like the slapping that my
Nymph makes as I tow it. I used to run out fifty feet of painter to
attenuate the noise - now I don't notice it.

From many decades ago when I was out racing my Sunfish every week, I think I
remember that a little leech flutter was nothing to be concerned about as
long as the rest of the sail was well shaped.

So, out the other day for a nice relazing sail.
Noticed that the trailing edge of the mizzen would flutter when the sprit was interferring with it, but not when the sail was flying
free, on the "good tack".
You can look at the title page of chebacco.com for a picture of my sprit angle, etc.
Toughts? Anybody noticed this with thier spritsails?
I can make a bowed sprit, or even a triangle one that folds down flat for storage. Toying with the latter.
