Re: Epoxy Question

It sounds like crystallization. The same happened to some System Three resin my
father "lent" me. Although it's referred to as crystallization, in our case it looked more
like a large, lumpy, opaque white blob at the bottom of the container of resin.

We soaked the container in hot water from the kitchen sink's tap for 3-4 hours and it
cleared up.

John,
I bought several gallons of RAKA resin & hardener more that a few years
ago. I keep the 'Master Jugs' in the basement where the temperature is
fairly constant & on the cool side. I 'decant', as needed, into my
'quart' sized working dispensers with the 5:1 metering pumps.
The ONLY thing I have noticed is a darkening of the 5:1 hardener. By the
time you mix in any 'fillers' . . . especially since my 'basic' is Wood
Flour . . . any 'tint' disappears.

Not really a concern for me anyway, as I use 'Traditional' Amber-tone
Varnish on any 'Bright Finish' items.

They will all crystallize, given enough time (and it's
exacerbated by low temps). I'v got a three year old
jug of Raka in my garage right now that's just full of
crystals. Next time I get ready to use it, I'll just
put it in a bucket if warm water and the crystals will
dissolve. No problem.

There you go, screwing up a perfectly good theory with facts. :-)

Might write the epoxy products guy and ask his advice. Remember reading somewhere, the west folks saying to put it in hot water it
it crystalized.

Thanks for the tip, Richard. Actually, I am using the clear epoxy
from epoxy products (I think that is the company). Good stuff, I
think.

Dennis
Ah, you must be using West epoxy! :-)

Put it in a tub of hot water to break up the crystalization.

I have been fashioning a new mast for my boat. When I went to mix
epoxy hardner and base, I noticed the base was a little lumpy (it is
a little over a year old). The lumps were soft and mixing broke them
up some, but still there were semi-solids noticeably floating around
in the mixture. Has anyone else had this experience? Will it cause
any problems that I should know about?

Thanks,
