[bolger] Re: Ancient rowboats

I'm sure that you have discovered that Mystic Seaport Museum has
pictures of most of its boats on the web. That should cover the 19th
century in the NE USA.

I suspect that all pictures of boats extant prior to at least the 18th
century are "interpretations and renditions ... ... rather than the real
thing". Some of the old stuff is intriguing and interesting if you enjoy a
bit of speculative history. Lionel Casson, in "The Ancient Mariners", (1991,
Princeton University Press), has an interesting and plausible interpretation
of an emergency in a harbor depicted on a Roman relief and reproduced as
Plate 45 in that edition. His "Ships and Seamanship in the Ancient World",
(John Hopkins University Press, 1991) represents, I'm sure a culling of the
best extant imagery to be found down to the Roman Empire. Pretty slim
pickings for the would-be builder of reproductions.

I am looking for a source for pictures of rowboats from biblical times
to the present. Woodenboat had a great series on the Martin Skiff.
Are there any publications that would have such information? Any help
would be appreciated.I have a concern that some pieces of art may be
renditions and interpretations of actual boats instead of the real
thing. I am looking for authenticity.
