Alex,
First you wash it with water (to remove the blush), then you sand it, then wash
with thinners. In general, epoxy makes a good base for paint and I have had
success just using gloss and semigloss alkyd enamel house paint right over the
prepared surfaces. I will use a white primer under a light paint, more for
masking the wood color than for paint adhesion. Rarely, if I want a really
smooth finish, I'll use a sanding primer as a final filler prior to coating. If
you are using latex paints, I think a coat of flat enamel or propriatory primer
might help the longevity of the finish. It seems to on my house, at any rate. If
you choose to use $200 a gallon two part polyurethane, follow the directions
_exactly_ (and consider seeing a psychiatrist). Priming certainly can't hurt, in
any case. Whatever you do, paint a small inconspicuous area first and make sure
the paint is compatable with the epoxy. I once had to strip an entire hull after
using a paint that simply wouldn't set up because of some mysterious interaction
between it and the coating underneath. I used primer on that job, too, so you
never know....

Alex,
I have a Diablo that is similarly constructed to your boat. I used
a simple fresh water rinse to get the blush off, let it dry, then
applied two coats of alkyd enamel house paint over the prescribed
primer (see manufacturers recommendation. After 5 years of very hard
and abusive use, the paint on the epoxy is still quite good.
Non-epoxied surfaces showed wear and tear and were subsequently epoxied
and repainted. If you use a gloss enamel, less dirt will adhere to it.
Good Luck

First of all I have to say that I know little about painting boats - but I
used latex on Landroval this past month - and I've had two discoveries -
first I've given up on Kilz2. I used that on the interior and did have some
problems with it not adhereing as well as I expected - and when I called the
kilz people they were horrified that I was using it on a boat and over epoxy.
They claimed that they tested it over epoxy and were not pleased with the
results - that was their response. West System sent me a copy of a test they
did on latex primers - there were a number that did well and some that didn'
t - so all primers are not alike. One of the ones that did the best was
Sherwin Williams Pro Block. I used that on the outside of the boat and it has
adhered just fine. The second discovery is that it's very true that latex is
a soft finish and mars easily - very easily - but I've also found that after
my bow kissed the dock on our maiden voyage that I could take a foam brush
and the leftover paint and in 30 seconds the "kiss" was gone. So easy to fix.

I have pulled my plywood 15' Bolger Sea Hawk power dory hull off the molds
after sheathing the exterior, but now am wondering about paint application.
Can you simply paint onto the epoxy after sanding and washing with water, or
does there need to be a primer put on to help the paint adhere?
Any ideas on this?
