dimension in the text
refers to the thickness
of the shoe, not the whole
bottom.
Building an Illinois, [in
my head], I imagine laminating
the shoe from three layers of
pressure treated 'copper green'
2x8 lumber fastened together with
an air gun nailer or stapler.
If the shoe was built from plywood,
you certainly wouldn't use
11 layers of 1/2" MDO! If PB&F didn't
approve of lumber, perhaps four layers
of 1 1/4" CDX plywood?
I like the idea of using rot resistant
pressure treated ply and lumber below the
waterline, in a 'house boat', but
once again, I am dreaming...

Figure a four sided box,

640 SF a side = 20 sheets
x4 would take 80 sheets of ply.
Double that for inside 'ceilings'
and a triple layered bottom adds
up to 180 sheets. Plus 40 for
shelves, berths, floor etc. is 220.
1/2 MDO can be bought in that
quantity for $25/sheet = $5,500
Rounding up, Illinois could be had
for $30,000 I bet.
About the same square footage as a
city apartment, which is San Francisco
would cost $2,000 a month to rent.
500 SF interior space, plus a 500 SF sun deck!
I guess it would be about the same
amount of work to build as building
a mountain vacation cabin.

"The only thing that stands between most of us and an Illinois is 450
sheets of plywood and a little time."
That "only thing" is a lot of plywood, where I live good Marine grade Ply of 1/2" thickness is about $200 (Australian) a 8'x4' sheet. 450 sheets at this cost = $90000. I suppose ordering this amount you'd probably get a reasonable discount, but just think about all the epoxy needed and most likely fibreglass to sheathe the hull, not to mention everything else!
Still If you had the money and time I think Illinois would be a marvellous craft. Maybe about $160000 Australian(about $105000 US) may see her complete, but most people I know don't seem to have that sort of "pocket money"! Then again if the idea is to build her to replace a house she may be good value until you get tired of the lifestyle??
