Taking a walk in the forest,
selecting a stick for a mast
was pretty darn pleasant too!
I don't recommend a "stick" tree mast for Teal. My mast is a solid piece
of douglas fir, that I got from lumber--not very expensive, if I recall.
But shaping it is *very* easy. You mark off the dimension, and then you
get out your planer, and about an hour later, you have a mast, an
ankle-deep pile of shavings, a sweet smelling workshop, and a marvelous
glow of pride emanating from your arms, shoulders, and back. The work is
not hard, is remarkably pleasant, and I believe that one would be a fool
to give up what is clearly the most pleasant of all boat building tasks.
