Re: Bruce Hector's TIMS project

Bruce,

Like the Viking long ships and Aleutian kayaks, TIMS may be a craft
that needs to be flexible. Your original idea of lashings may end up
being better rigid bolts and clamps.

Hi Max,

We got her all back to the shop without a glitch. I'm propping the
Duckworks unit up on blocks so I can add some water and see where the
leak is. She took on 2 inches overnight.

Also, I've got to epoxy the bulkhead of "Use No Hooks", I experienced
a joint failure there also, where she bolted to Timmy. This joint was
just screws into a 2 by 2 with silicone caulk, and I guess there was
too much stress on it for that type of construction. You can see in
the pics that Timmy was squatting quite noticeably. I guess that was
because the aft bulkhead of the TIMS unit she was bolted to was
splitting open. A dollop of West Sys. goop should fix that.

Then we're of to the races like a herd of turtles.

Relax Pierre,

We just finished loading all 46' of Tims and returning it to the Rust
Check parking lot. I'll find the leak in the Duckworks unit tomorrow,
then I'll stand them all on end for a "boathenge" photo op. That'll
be my TIMS contribution until the Messabout in Kingston on the
weekend of September 5, 6 and 7.

TOP SECRET! There is a chance, just a chance, that TIMS will operate
as a functioning aircraft carrier with both a take off and a landing
at said Messabout. If I told ya' any more, I'd have to kll ya'. So
just be there, or be square.

Bonjour Pierre!

He's back on, just busy celebrating his return I guess. I had a whole

HOWEVER, now he will no doubt return to his Mission In Life, which is
demonstrating the Earth's curvature by means of an extraordinarily
lllloooonnngggg plywood boat (which PCB would have no doubt designed at some
point anyway.. And will also no doubt approve of!).

Now just in case we actually have to print the T-shirts again, perhaps you
should forward that PayPal info, on a wholly secure and trustworthy basis of
course...

Aye!Aye! Capt' Sam! Sounds like one hell-of-an-event and a big one
too! We'll have to keep this idea alive over the next few years as
other Big Bolger Boats are launched and their respective captains
plan the agendas with such a messabout in mind.
I'll do my level best to keep up on WINDERMERE for a 2004 launch
barring any crazy events;like weather/season dramas.
Very good idea.......I likes it alot:-)

What a great idea! We need to get a lake series
(Windermere), a false-nose series (Topaz) and a state
series (Tennesssee? Dakota?) and various beer in
bottles and cans, and compare vessel/hull forms and
thier effect on the hydrodynamics of the various
liquids. All we need to do is pick a
mutually-convenient meeting place (Georgian Bay?
Bimini?), a time, and we got a first-class messabout.
The first step--finish Windermere!

David,

whole bunch I got from the Quebec Bar Association.

Hi Sam,
Not too worry.....we're a thick skinned lot up here!Although I
would be more inclined to see WINDERMERE as a cousin rather then a
brother as her developement has different roots, especially up forward
under the nose :-)
I would love to one day cruise down and raft up or lay close to
SPAT since they are so close in length and size.It would be a very
illuminating excerise in the creative uses possible with plywood. As
for the beer, you better hold on to your hats 'cause if Le Mouton Noir

beat me to it :-D .......besides,he has a far more dedicated palate

states of comfortable repose..........

Peter, I meant big brother WINDEMERE. No offense
meant to the mighty Windemere.

Peter, the pictures posted were those I took at PB's
request at various speeds--my stingy and cowardly
nature prevents me from running a motor at anything
more than about three-quarter speed, particularly an
outboard motor, although I have nothing but good
things to say about my Canadian Yamaha High Thrust 50
four stroke.

Yeah, man, come on down. I would love to see Spat
lying next to her big brother Champlain. Plus we have
a local "brewery" which makes what they call "beer,"
and we have been waiting for a Canadian to come down
and tell us if this is the genuine article. Sam

Welcome Back Sam!
Sounds like a beautiful cruise you had there......you should
write an article for Duckworks with pictures too:-)
I am heartened to hear that all the fine chinaware has been
replaced and that your style of cruising is more of the gentlemanly
sort........most fitting for such a fine design.
Looking forward to seeing some neat pictures of your lovely
SPAT,especially interior shots with people for scale.

Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan, who dreams often of undertaking a long cruise down Lake
Champlain to points south,in his Bolger WINDERMERE,when she is
finally launched along the shores of the St.Lawrence........
The unattractive Topaz shown dragging her tail at
eighteen knots like a drunken cormorrant is, um, my
Spat. The nose-high attitude is not due to improper
motor trim, as apparently Mr. Bolger suggested, but to
having the motor set too low (which amounts to the
same thing, near enough). I corrected this and indeed
got her to plane flat. With near-empty gas tanks, dry
hull, and no load, with just me on board (and maybe a
little help from the flood tide), I got her up to
22kts by gps with a high-thrust Yamaha 50. I have
since moved the motor back down, however, because the
propeller under that long, light hull had a tendency
to cavitate in following seas in the steep chop we get
here in Delaware Bay. I cruise her at twelve knots so
she never looks bow high, and the set of china and
stemware I bought to replace that smashed producing
the photo has remained intact.
I guess I will have to post some pictures now, in
defense of Spat's good name, if nothing else. I just
got back from a ten-day trip to Lake Champlain and
back. I trailered the boat from Lewes, Delaware to
Sandy Hook, ran up the Hudson and the Champlain canal,
then up the lake to Burlington, Vermont. Came back
the same way, but brought her all the way home to
Delaware by water. I got back into Lewes at 9:30
p.m. last night, just beat a line of thunderstorms
crossing Delaware Bay mouth from Cape May, N.J. The
Topaz is a great little cruiser and, given her light
and shallow design, not a bad sea boat, neither. 58
gallons of gas consumed, Burlington, Vt. to Lewes,
Del. Bolger knows how to draw them. Sam

I have long admired the Minnesota design. I faxed PB&F on Friday with
several questions about the design. I received an answer on Sunday.
He answered my questions, but then politely suggested I look at Topaz
without necessarily saying it was a better design for my purposes.
He included a copy of the MAIB Topaz article. The boats are similar
in size:

Minnesota - 33' x 6'6"
Topaz - 31'4" x 7'4"

Topaz includes his newer filleted nose design, whereas Minnesota is a
traditional flat bottom sharpie. Topaz has a street-car style
interior with front and rear cockpits. Minnesota has a v-berth style
interior and a rear cockpit with an "outhouse" at the very end.

I'm curious what other people's thoughts are on the comparison of
these two designs. Topaz has been more popular, as several have been
built. As far as I know, the only Minnesota built was not built to
the plans at all and Bolger disowned it.

Thanks,

Ralph
