Hours schmowers, get that beautiful Chebacco "Wayward Lass" on its
trailler and start driving east NOW!

You can easily make it in a week, and there's 9 days until the
Messabout.

I came out there to see you, now it's time to "pay the piper!"

Hi Pierre

I was away (on the boat) over the weekend, and I see Peter L.
answered your question (thanks, Peter, I didn't know the answer!).

I do my sailing mostly out of Victoria BC, with occasional road-trips
for multi-day sailing holidays. If you or anyone else on the list
gets out this way, let me know and we'll get out for a few hours.

Pierre,
The last three boats I built were easy to"register".You do not
need a license, unless you plan to do some type of commercial work.
Go down to the Canada Customs House,on Mcgill College Ave.,right at
the bottom in old Montréal.I recall the fee as being 10 to 15 bucks.
Just remember to keep ALL your receipts from building your boat since
it will just be a matter of time before le minister d'impot will
contact you to find out if you paid taxes on your boat......the
burden will be on you to"prove" that you built the boat and paid for
all the materials as apposed buying the boat from some one else.

Sincerely,
Peter Lenihan

What if the engine is larger then 9.9HP. I'm looking at 112 pages of
rules and regulations and two pages of form that seems simple enough,
but no word on the procedure.

James, where do you usually boat?

No need to license a small boat. If your motor is under 10 hp, it's
not required. My 20 foot Chebacco has never been licensed, but has
crossed the border several times, both on the trailer and on her own
bottom.

However, last time we crossed with the trailer, I had Canada Customs
document us going south by signing a picture of the boat -- this
saved any delay on the way back. The time before the guy was
paranoid that I might have bought the boat while out of the country.

I really don't know of anyone, who when totally frustrated trying to
license a Nymph, or a Diablo, or a Skimmer, for three years got
nowhere, so abject in desperation painted random numbers on the bow
so he could cross the border to a Messabout.

I mean, who ever checks?

As I said, I've never heard of it being done, have you?

Black Bruce
Scury scourge of the 1000 Islands, neo-Luddite and beuracracia
bandito!
Bob,

Thanks for the cold bucket of water, you are probably right about
this, but I'd hate to find out that I can't licences my boat
because ...fill in the blank. Unlicensed boats can't go thru locks
and there's plenty of those around here.

I just hope to hear from fellow boat builder who for some insane
reason felt they had to have their boats licensed and what ordeal
thay may have gone thru.

On a positive note the fine folks at the fisheries tell me this will
only cost me $5.00

thanks

Maybe you are getting yourself overexcited. See Sec 4 Hull Design
Requirements. My reading says floatation has to WORK. It doesn't
specify the particular foams in your link. Generally construction
standards are the same in Vermont since the Canadian regs have been
modified to be more in line with ABYC etc. By the way Dow Corning
denies that blue board or pink board float. They did not design the
material for flotation but for insulation so that is all they will
answer to. Liability......

I really don't know what they are talking about, I'm still waiting
for a call back. I'm told that due to last weeks power outage this
call back may take a week instead of the usual 24-48 hours.

go figure

You have to understand that Dow Chemical can afford the very best lobbyists in both Canada and the US.

Chuck - who me cynical?
How is foam used in a home built boat? As sheet of pink/blue foam
placed under the bunks and floorboards or encased in plastic bottles
or inside fiberglass "holds".

I am thinking just plain foam could retains water against the wood
and cause rot.

Thanks

I am thinking just plain foam could retains water against the wood
and cause rot.

Thanks

Any fellow canadians out there tried to licenses their home built
boats?

I just got off the phone with some technocrate who pointed me to the
following link where the list approved materials to be used in the
construction process. Other links reference the building standards
that one must follow. Are these guys crazy! They are taking the
pleasure out of pleasure craft.
