Re: Pointy Skiff survives the season - Yellow Leaf
Thanks for the information on Yellow Leaf. and thanks to all those
who pointed out many interesting boats to look at: Geodesic
Aerolites (I need the Rob Roy!), and Michalak's stuff. But, I think
I can manage the June Bug.
The prime purpose of this craft is to get to the mother ship with the
family of four and perhaps a dog. What is tricky is getting back
into the rowboat at the end of the day without an embarrasing
mishap. Pointy Skiff had sides just straight enough to make a nice
platform for getting into. It just was a little too short to
cartop. I think June Bug will cartop well as it is just the right
length to hit the rack of the Expoder at just the right angle. I use
the following process to launch Pointy:
1. drag the boat aft til the transom hits the pavement (at this
point it is resting on the rear door/stop light unit).
2. get under the boat and grab the bow painter which is dangling in
my arm.
3. push the boat so that it does a controlled drop to the water (I
always go down the ramp to within 10 feet of the car. I stand on the
top of the transom as it goes down. This is a kind of a contolled
crash. It actually works real well.
Putting it back on the car is the reverse. We start with the boat
backwards (stern forward) and then flip the bow onto the back door of
the car prior to hefting skywards.

David'
Bolger designed a 15'6" x 3' double ended canoe/dory called Yellow Leaf
(in "Small Boats") that would be easy to car-top. It can be made with 2
or 3 sheets of 1/4" plywood and 1x2 or molding for gunnels (and chine
logs if needed). You can add a keel, skeg, and flotation if you like.
It's fine in smooth water, I haven't had it out in rough water.
