version would be a big and impressive feat. Two guys could do it in 3
hours -- maybe one very determined guy. What would it take? Four
sheets 1/4" luan, a few 16' 1X6s or 1X8s for ripping into gunwales
laminations and chine logs and the bottom strips, and some
thwarts . . . a lot of PL. Could be done for $104, maybe . . .
All best,
Garth
Every year at the Clayton NY Antique Boat Museum they have a similar
contest.
Only the building and trials is combined and timed, ie: first one to
build and navigate their "vessel" out to a nearby bouy and back is
the winner.
The twist ......
Only materials allowed are cardboard and duct tape!
So, build it that way, and walk home with a gallon or two of epoxy.
Supplies:
Cardboard, Free
Duct tape, $10
Beer, $12
Epoxy, $82.10

I agree with John Bell - go for Teal or another design with straight side
cuts that you can rip out in a jiffy with just a straight edge. The bottom
is cut to fit freehand, but that goes pretty fast, esp. with power plane
for cleanup. Brick/Tortoise have no bottom curves to cut, but I bet their
side curves would take longer to fiddle with. Would make an interesting
contest - can you get teams to build one of each? Let us know how it comes
out!

I think it probably depends on how the boats are judged! (i.e. is there
a race, points for load carrying, appearance, what?)
If it's really a throwaway boat I bet you could tape the chines with
polyester, but I tend to agree that chine logs will be easier to do in
the heat of competition.

Three bottom pieces plus 2 butt straps.
Two pieces plus a butt strap each side.
One gunnel cross piece in the middle.
All in all, a Yellow Leaf would be
a fun extremely light weight boat.
[It might be the lightest Bolger boat.]
I want one!

I think you need to call the phone number
(925) 432-7301 to register and to give them
your materials list.
Starts at 9AM 'til Noon, then a race around
a 'mini-course' in the marina. Duct Tape
would hold up long enough, I bet.
Two sheets of 1/4" CDX and a roll of duct tape
should cost about $29 bucks. [Plus $75.10 of
PL Premium glue for me to take home surplus.]

The Brick has 21 pieces of wood.
The Yellow leaf has only 16.
The difference being the edge nail pieces,

Yellow Leaf has no chine log and no
gunnel 'log'.

What's included in the $104 worth of stuff? That's
what would guide me on the design.
Duct tape chines, though... Oh my, that would really
count off a lot if I were a judge! It's gotta float
for more than a few minutes to be a real boat.
The old standby Q 'n D boat is Teal... Yellow Leaf
(with real chine logs instead of duct tape) is about
as easy.
Better yet, design your own!
