Re: [bolger] Digest Number 1664

Russ,
1} The opposite of 'tender' is 'stiff'

2} I empathize with low back problems. And with a wife that hates
'heeling', I understand the desire for a stable platform. This leads to.
. .

3} Rubens Nymph was sold to a gentleman who wanted to do some
'gunkholing' with his wife. She had a degenerative muscle disease and
therefore had a great deal of mobility problems. At approximately 8 feet
LOA x 4 foot beam she fit the bill nicely. Although there has been some
recent comments about 'oil canning' of the bottom, I could stand with my
feet together {giving a loading of 225+ pounds/sq.ft.} and got NO
MOVEMENT. This test was done between two sawhorses with no 'water
support'. There was nothing extraordinary about the construction . . .
1/4 in. Lauan, epoxy & 6 oz. glass on the exterior.

4}EASILY trailered. 'Cartopping' might require some thought for a 'rack'
or support wide enough for the gunnels. {NOTE: the gentleman took
delivery using his small SUV {?} and the short, standard, built-in,
'factory rack'. We placed her, right side up, between the outer rails .
. . just like they were made for her. The 'however' with this was the
'angles' of the fore & aft transoms . . . they probably created a lot of
'lift' at highway speeds}

5} A small electric or gas o/b should be no problem . . . although her
rocker is for rowing. Therefore, a motor will NOT be as effective at
anything above a slow speed.

6} It would probably cost as much, if not more . . . and certainly more
aggravation . . .to DIY an 'on-board' generator. I've seen some
small{about a foot square}, compact, and efficient generators for sale .
. . Honda comes to mind. Look at your local Home Depot, or Northern
catalog.

7}I wouldn't go with the 'DIY one-lunger' idea - {I CAN give you some
horror stories}. Definitely not on the Nymph. However, I DO recommend
her as a 'beginning' to get some solid experience in BOTH building &
handling.

Regards & Good Luck,
