2nd hand sails are cheap, often free. When recut they often have
heaps of life left in them. And they don't make a horrible noise.
You will probably end up with a slightly heavier sail than a new
one because you are cutting down the sail from a small keelboat
to make a dinghy sail, but you aren't out to win races.

This is what I did for the spritsail on my daughter's D4.

I will check that out, thank you. I also found the
construction manual for the Spirt Rig on the Teal
which is exactly the same sail. Inch for inch. Go to
www.sailrite.com and search Bolger.
But thanks again...

Well, I am with both of you. Being my first boat, I
want to get on the water before the season ends, which
it will soon here on the Great South Bay of Long
Island. Hence a quick and cheap sail. I will certainly
invest more when I have the funds to do so, but the
quick way is the poly tarp sail.
Over the Winter I plan on getting the proper material
from Sailrite and build one myself. It's all a
learning process so that I may achieve my ultimate
goal of circumnavigation.
I'll get to that at another time...
Thanks again
Look for pics by Monday night...

Ed, my first project was a Surf, also. Built it about two years ago and
then tried to interpret the sail rigging. Being an Xtreme neophyte, I
had splinters in my fingers from scratching my head -- until I read Jim

I respect that opinion, while I
hold another. Polytarp sails,
like home made boats, give you
the satisfaction of the sense
of 'doing it yourself'.

http://www.hallman.org/bolger/Teal4/

Shows a couple pictures of my making
one of those 59 SF 'Teal class' sails
last month. Bought my polytarp from
www.tarps.com for less than $20.

One trick I learned in the process, is
to spray some 3M spray adhesive
on the seams, before you fold them
over. Search out the WWW web pages on
how to cut sails, especially those
by Jim Michalak.
One of the good things about Surf is that it uses the
ubiquitous 59 sq. ft. leg o'mutton sail shared by many
bolger designs including Teal, Nymph, Cartopper, Gypsy
ect. You can buy a professionally made "real" sail
from Payson for only $175, which is a GREAT value. Let
me say it again, this is the BEST value in sails
around.

I would not even consider making a polytarp sail if I
were building one of these boats. Start saving your
pennies!

Thanks, I will put up some pictures of the boat as it
is now. Though I need to move my computer out doors to
get that.
Thanks again...

"Ed",
That is a good first time boat you're building! That "spar" you
refer to is normally called a sprit boom. Unlike a conventional
boom, the sprit boom has no solid attachment point to the mast via a
gooseneck but instead is secured ,loosely,to the mast with a length
of line/rope.You can tension this line, the snotter, to help control
the shape of the sail;that is,how big a "belly" you want in your
sail.
The sail itself is tied to the mast,no sail track,no pulleys.
Since you have already built the boat, with only a few accessories
remaining, the best "guidance" lays before you, right on the plans.I
do not have my set of SURF plans before me, but I seem to recall
that they were/are very clearly drawn with all the needed details on
display.
You have to post some pictures of you SURF,now that everyone
knows yours is about to be launched :-)

I am a first time builder and need an explination on the sailing rig.
"Snotter", and so forth. Without sounding too much like an idiot,
could someone give a detailed explination how to rig this boat? I have
trouble understanding it all. The hull is complete save the rudder and
lee board. I'm about to begin the mast and spar. Just need a little
guidance.
