[bolger] Re: Manatee, Romp

Bird of Dawning was docked here in St. Petersburg at the municipal marina
when I moved here in 1994-a really neat boat-I used to dinghy over to check
it out every now and again. It was neat to see a big bloger boat up close
and personal after having read about them since the eighties. The sad thing
was that it seemed to be very seldom used.

The boat has moved and I thought it was sold-seems like I saw it apprear
again in Charlie Morgan's listings recently but can't remember when.

Hoping to see all these in another book someday; all the entertaining
possibilities that I will never build, and maybe one or two that I
will. Best bang per buck so far is from Different Boats, second place
Small Boats. Could only be improved by waterproof bathtub/rain/spray
edition. Don't have the other books yet. Maybe after the books some
slap together version of Brick or similar will be in next place. Seems
like there's more possibilities in the same vein with Brick and
Tortoise.

Dept. Bargeyacht choices:
We have a commission brewing for a Californian on an updated 30' ROMP
now with 10' beam and 'somewhat off-centerboard' for a 'real cabin' to
be coldmolded/ stripped, Chinese Gaff Cat-Yawl explicitly requested,
headroom where it counts, and shelter suitable for 'romps' up to
Alaska.

Then there is leeboard Yawl #361 BIRD OF DAWNING II at 12mx3mx.6m
(metric!!) built in fiberglass by Edey and Duff and recently briefly on
the market.

And there is Olle Lind's #326 strip-built 89 sq.meter Junk-rigged Yawl
Centerboarder at 12.1x3.3x.60 (metric again) with construction begun
but never completed beyond hull due to personal tragedies. So where in
Sweden is the hull??

P.S. On MANATEE/ALERT Jim Melcher offered to build several hulls when
he finished his, but there were no takers. A small squadron of them
could have really added up exciting shallow-draft cruising if Melcher's
success with her is any indication.
