Re: [bolger] OT Baltimore/DC area
Anapolis was my favorite, back when I was commuting to Columbia from
Louisville. A friend showed me that, if you're both wearing suits and
walking in step with a military bearing, one can tour the Academy grounds
even after visiting hours. Of course it was raining and the guard maybe
decided we weren't dangerous enough to justify getting his uniform wet.
Bill claimed to have attended the Governor's cocktail party on his yacht by
the same approach. (Walk in as if you owned the place.)
The Smithsonian takes planning and MANY hours.

Hal,
The Annapolis Boat Shows are during that time. The Sailboat show starts on
Thursday and ends on Monday, Columbus Day. The Powerboat Show starts the
next Thursday and ends the following Monday. All this is to say the
Annapolis will be extremely crowded and well booked up. You probably won't
have any problems from DC on to Baltimore, I don't think the hotels get that
crowded up there.

Sounds like you might want to stay in or near DC on the weekend. With
all the museums, monuments, etc. to see you could spend weeks there.
If you don't stay in downtown DC, try to get a place near one of the
DC Metro stops outside DC so you don't have to drive into DC. I agree
with Frank's choice of the most interesting museums and they're close
to each other.
Seems like I'm usually downtown in Baltimore for the restaurant scene
but there are various nooks and crannies to explore around the
harbour. I'm not sure what the schedules are like during the week
days but there are various tour boat cruises ranging from converted
Shipjacks to small "ships". There are a lot of the water taxies
(usually 20 - 30 person pontoon boats) and some of them sell all day
passes so you can go from stop to stop (Fells Point, Ft. McHenry,
Canton, etc.) and get on and leave when you want. There's a brick
promenade that runs along the harbour all the way out to Canton if
you like to walk. The National Aquarium is definitly worth seeing.
Plenty of good resturants within walking distance or water taxi ride.
And if you want to see some of the unseemly side of Baltimore there's
the world famous "Block" just north of the harbour. A solid block of
strip tease joints and burlesque (sp?) houses known to commercial
sailors the world over. Interestingly enough the Block sits right
next to the police headquarters, but hey, that's Baltimore. Actually,
Fells Point supposedly had a lot of that too in addition to its
numerous rowdy pubs but it's become quite gentrified in the last 50
years.

If you are staying in Baltimore...
If you are into Patrick O'Brian, Hornblower, etc - don't miss
Constellation. Fells Point in Baltimore is nice for an evening -
maybe Berth's Mussels or John Stevens if you like an old water rat
scene with lots of people and cobble stone streets. The Morning
Edition (near Patterson Park) is a good place for sunday morning
omlets in Baltimore, but kind of out of the way and hard to find.
My favorites in DC are Smithsonian Air and Space and Natural History
museums, the National History Museum. Red Sea Ethiopian restaurant in
Adam's Morgan.
