Re: [bolger] Re: Preglassing and polyester film

Or you can spend $3 or $4 at your local hardware store, or Lee Valley or
Wood Craft or ... Put scraper cabinet wood into Google and jump back.

It's a MUST tool!

Shave Hooks are also cheap and very useful for getting in the corners and
knocking down the bad spots.

Another way to clean up the surface is with a scraper.

You can make one by cutting index card sized pieces out of an old
handsaw. Don't get it hot while cutting; this will ruin the temper
of the steel.

Place the pieces in a vise and file the edge perpendicular with the
sides. Take a piece of hardened steel (an old router bit shaft works
well here) and burnish the sides about a dozen times on each side.
This will cause the top edge to cup. Then do the same to the top
edge with a slight angle towards the side. This will cause the cupped
edge to curl over.

Be careful as a well honed card/cabinet scraper is razor sharp. This
is what they used prior to sand paper to get a good finish on
furniture.

I have posted a pic in the photo section named "Scraper" to give you
an idea. Watch the line wrap in the link...it gets me all the time.

It works, I didn't invent it, but forgot who wrote it to give them
credit. I saw it in an article somewhere and a pro boat builder
swore by this method to avoid epoxy dust. The surface comes off in
real thin curls about half as thick as tissue paper and it also will
cut down pinpoint bubbles and small lumps.
Just as Sam Devlin does it.

Hi Peter. Peel ply used as a smoothing method? I hear if in
conjunction with vacuum bagging, but are you saying to use without the
vacuum? In other words: wet surface, lay on glass, wet out glass with
roller etc., apply peel ply, squeegee/roll smooth or??, allow to cure,
then peel off? -Bill

Rather than a plastic film why not use peel ply -a type of dacron cloth
material. You can peel small bits off at a time and bond straight on to
the area without any prep work, then use it over the joins and edges of
glass tapes to fair the edges.
Minimal fairing, sanding, dust, effort, clean up time and a smooth
finish.
A similar material can be had from dress material shops. Best to get
the coloured stuff so you don't forget to remove it.
