Re: A Bolger Messabout With Phil & Susanne (long)
I grew up in Gloucester, so I can give some thoughts about what's
where. I no longer live there, and so I have no local "pull". But
my mother still is there, so I visit often. And my knowledge of
local situations for bigger boats is limited, since I only rowed and
sailed a dory when I was younger.
Campgrounds: The Cape Ann Campsite was mentioned, near Wingaersheek
Beach, north and west end of Annisquam River. It is a typical tourist
plus summer resident place. There is a launching pier nearby. One
would be about a mile from Ipswich Bay. The River is tidal, decent
enough for rowing and cruising as long as not too close to low
tide. Sailing for small boats OK closer to Beach, or once out of the
river area. Parking for cars and trailers would be possible at
Beach, about a mile away, if after Labor Day. Run a shuttle van?
There is another camground on Little River, which goes off the
Annisquam. If you look at a map, it is the arm of the river that
follows route 128 back to Boston, on the south side. I don't know
much about it-- think it used to be a summer camp, now a campground.
Has a dock, don't know about launching area.
Right at the highway bridge over the river is a marina, nothing too
big or fancy. Disadvantage is: from Little River campsite to open
water is a good 2-3 miles in either direction. Right on Little River
the rowing and smaller boat sailing can be decent, again, when
avoiding low tides.
Near the high school is another ramp, on the other end of the
Annisquam River, so parking would not be a problem. It is about 1/2
mile to the drawbridge leading to Gloucester Harbor, inner and
outer. Disadvantage is that the "Cut" where the drawbridge is can
have a stiff current. Small, unpowered or underpowered craft might
need a tow unless the timing of the tides is right. Lighter,
portable boats could launch on the other side, on a nearby beach
(where the Blackburn Challenge ends), and could go back to the hish
school to park. There is also a marina near the drawbridge, bigger
than the one further down the river.
I have no other knowledge about these marinas.
Also of note is that Thacher Island, where the Twin Lights are, now
has a simple campground. Problem is geting there, mostly from
Rockport. Small boats could be pulled on shore, but larger one have
no real protection. Day trip?
I also thought of the Maritime Center in Gloucester for a gathering
place. It is basically an old maine railway/boatyard that is now a
working boat museum. Ther is a Dory Shop, they are restoring a
schooner, and the musuem has a few functioning pulling boats. Fame
was brought there for a bit of final preparation. They had a few
concerts there this summer, and one featuring sea chanteys was quite
good, and beer was served (in case that was a question of any
significance...) There is space, a garage, a float, and it is right
on the downtown waterfront. I don't know what the attitude is toward
plywood boxes on water :-)
All these places are no more that a 15-20 minute drive from each
other.
There are other launching places -- Essex has a few -- but to
accomodate a large number is problematic, as far as parking goes,
unless smaller groups were made.
I will repeat that I currently have no connections in the town.
However (and I might regret writing this) I do visit there over the
winter, about every six weeks, and, thanks to my Mom, I might be
spending part of the summer at the family cottage in Essex. So I
might be willing to research some of the possibilities regarding
camping, parking, festivity location, so that there is some concrete
information to work with. And by next summer I hope to have an
Instant Boat or two done, or else I will be there in my Tortise!

Ah, but there are two campgrounds in Gloucester, one of which is even
supposed to be acceptable. And it's real close to Bolger's house and I
think maybe a mile or two to a beach (tho I guess we'd all have to get
into cars). Unfortunately I seem to recall hearing that they're real
interested in people quieting down at a reasonable hour.

I'm afraid I'm not the right guy to organize something like this, but
I'm willing to help. (I live about an hour away.) I've been advised that
there is a TSCA branch in the area with experience putting on events.
I've also been advised that since Bolger is kind of a local hero in
Gloucester we might get some amount of help from the town (I'm thinking
maybe parking or being allowed to use some public beach or dock).
There's a beach in Salem Harbor which I'm told was used for a messabout
some years back. That might be nice as it's fairly sheltered. It's also
near a big marina. Not sure how they'd feel about us, but they did host
a big wooden boat show recently. The TSCA also had a messabout on a
nearby island, but I don't remember which one. Most of the above is
second hand info. Anyway, it seems to me that since there are a number
of boat groups in the area where we might be able to borrow some
expertise. The downside is (or might be) that it's an expensive area to
find rooms. I'm not aware of any camping areas with suitable beaches,
which was one of the really nice things about the Ontario event.

While I am not in Gloucester nor do I any connections
I do have a idea. It would be good to tie in with the
local maritime museum The Gloucester Maritime Center
they might be interested in doing a retrospect on
their native son in conjuntion with the messabout.
http://www.gloucestermaritimecenter.org/
They also have a nice dock and a place to host the
event. Maybe with them and the local tourist board
they might have enough pull with Fox to bring the Tall
Ship Rose to the event.

There is indeed a campground very close to where Bolger lives. And
there's a kind of a stone pier nearby, too. But the campground isn't
quite on the water and I have a feeling that the pier and its associated
parking would be overwhelmed if 50 boats show up. Also, and maybe this
isn't much of a problem given Bolger's preference for shallow draft, I
think really deep boats would have a problem there. Slow rowers like
the Nymph might have a problem when the tide is running. But it's a
nice, sheltered area, and Phil and Suzanne could look out at the boats
with binoculars from their porch, I think. Perhaps someone who knows the
Gloucester/Essex area better might know a better place? I am no expert
as I've only been there a couple of times. Perhaps we could assemble and
anchor TIMS as an auxiliary dock. I think it's important we have a
nearby campsite as room rates that close to Boston are likely to be
high. If this event happens, I would be very bummed if I couldn't make
it. I am not the person to organise this, but I do offer my help.
I think this is the campsite:
Cape Ann Camp Site on Atlantic Street (978)283-8683
I understand that they might not appreciate late night plonk sipping and
accordion playing, or at least the proprietor said they were strict
about noise. More room available after Labor Day, of course.
It's near Wingaersheek Beach. There's a marina within rowing distance,
though not necessarily SHORT rowing distance, just that we went by the
marina twice in the same day on the way to the pier and back.
Probably we shouldn't ALL be calling just yet, tho.

It would take a family emergency to keep me from this. I can only imagine
meeting the people who've built the boats, and seeing those boats. Wouldn't
it be great if this became an annual event.

Do we have any member's near Gloucester who'll take on the
organizing? Is there a suitable campground, marina, waterfront park?
I know hotels, motels won't be hard to find.
Jim Michalak says the best time for Messabouts seems to be either the
beginning of the season, to kick off the year. Ot the end, kind of a
cap to a great season. I'd have to agree with him. Also the hotels
aren't all full and the rates are lower before school gets out, or
after Labor Day.
A few events and a schedule really seemed to add focus to the recent
Kingston Messabout. A dinner, a breakfast, a party or two. Perhaps
a "Phil Bolger" celebrity roast would be well attended, I'd be there,
for sure.
Could be a big one, any Gloucesterite taking it on can count on my
help, to the limit that time and distance permits, and perhaps a tad
past that.

And of course, I'll be there with bells on. I'll drive Adagio down
the Chambly-Champlain route to the Hudson, then round the corner and
proceed to Gloucester towing a kilometer long train fo all my Bolger
(abd other) boxes. Of course, TIMS would be ncluded!

Heck, we'll bring _Shrike_ anyway, as Phil mentioned wanting to
see her, and she'd look cute sailing in company with _Gadfly_
and _Antichrist_.
I know that we have at least two "His"-type people on the list
with H&HS's; could at least one of you make it to this thing so
that we can have "His" and "Her" schooners in the same water?

Holy Mary, Mother of God. That will be a HUGE messabout. I don't know ANYONE
who wouldn't show.
I'll take a week off work and drive from Oklahoma, myself.
Pick a date. Any date.

Perhaps
a "Phil Bolger" celebrity roast would be well attended, I'd be there,
for sure.
Could be a big one, any Gloucesterite taking it on can count on my
help, to the limit that time and distance permits, and perhaps a tad
past that.
Bruce Hector
And of course, I'll be there with bells on. I'll drive Adagio down
the Chambly-Champlain route to the Hudson, then round the corner and
proceed to Gloucester towing a kilometer long train fo all my Bolger
(abd other) boxes. Of course, TIMS would be ncluded!

Phil- if you're still near Albany, please call me at 518 283-0565, in
Wynantskill, near Troy. Let's talk about our Martha Janes... Leo
Smith.

Hi everyone. I'm a sometimes visitor to the group. I
had lunch with Phil and Susanne in Gloucester today
after a nice ride in Shiveree to the fish and chips
place down town.
Susanne says that they'd like to have a Messabout in
Gloucester so Phil could see as many of his babies
(designs in the flesh or ply as the case may be) at
one time as is possible. She suggested sometime next
year to celebrate Phil's 76th year on the planet.
The dates are really fuzzy now but ought to get firmer
as the time approaches. Evidently some of Phil's more
elaborate designs are wending their way across the
Atlantic as I type this and Phil and Susanne expect
them to be in Gloucester sometime after the WoodenBoat
Show. Or, maybe, before the WoodenBoat Show. I told
you things are fuzzy now.
Susanne asked me to post this feeler for interest and
enthusiasm on the group. I'm interested enough so that
I think I'll try to trailer my Martha Jane to
Gloucester from San Francisco. I'm also going to try
to make all those modifications that PB&F recommended
after seeing their video of a modified MJ.
After stirring up this pot, I won't be available
regularly to answer questions as I'm driving my 21
year old VW Westphalia camper back to SF. I'm in
Albany now, and I plan to take at least a week off for
a bicycle ride, so if I don't answer questions it
isn't because I'm not real.
Besides, there aren't any real answers to share. They
want it to happen. (They probably won't be able to
provide much in terms of support, but they will be
there at least some of the time.) They don't know
exactly when would be the "best" time. In fact, they
are interested in what we think would be a good time.
So, keep your mast head pointing AWAY from the center
of the earth and prepare to drool over the Insolent
60. The current design pages are on the boards at the
Bolgers and she is one really beautiful boat.
