Re: [bolger] Re: Knots {was CarTopping}

Ron,

The "official" name of at least one monk's belt knot is "capuchin
knot", it's a multiple overhand carefully tightened to form an oval
knot with the cord forming a spiral around the knot.

Bruce -
From June through September my Pointy Skiff lives upside down on my
Ford Expoder's roof. It is about 4' too short to get up there
smoothly as the rear of the car will attest. If you had a sedan you'd
be better off.

Yes, it will seat two adults comfortably and run well with a 4hp
short or long shaft motor (two cycle). I sit on a pair of oars
between the thwarts while passenger sits in center thwart.

By the way...The short shaft motor will dig a scoop into the bottom
part of the exterior chine. Don't sweat it. it's close enough for
jazz, although if it bothers you, get the long shaft.

David Jost
working on the replacement for Pointy skiff" I think a 13 or 14'
punt would do it.
Background - My daughter is getting married in a Medieval wedding and
I'm going as a Friar. During my research on habits I ran across this
reference to a Monk's knot. Yes, it's the traditional stopper knot in
the rope belt. FYI if you take the lower part of your robe and pull
it up and insert it into the belt, you are then known as a "tucked"
friar, in other words, a Friar who is travelling out and about - say
in Sherwood forest. These were called Friar Tucks.

I've uploaded a pic of the knot as Monk's Knot in the Photos album.
Nothing too fancy but a nice change from a figure 8.

We cartopped our Payson Pirogue to Texas, Mexicao, up the west coast
to Vancover and home again last winter. She never shifted. A
tightening of the lines once in awhile, that's all.

It is so great to have a boat along. PP is a tad too small, so I'm
considering a Bolger Pointy Skiff or Welsford's Setnet Dinghy for
this winter. Anyone have experience with either of these as a
cartopper with two full sized adults and a small motor?

new "Save the Monuments" website. Some may even be boats. If you know
of a military or civilian monument that is rusting, please let me
know at the MonumentPreservation eGroup.
Bryant,
Not in Ashley or Smith . . . or ' Macramé '.

Since there aren't any Monasteries close by . . . I can only think it
would be what is tied at the end of the 'rope' that encircles the
'cloak'.

With that said,
1} Am I correct ?
2} It would be nice to have in the repertoire . . . any drawing sources
available ?
