now that the tax man has been paid Ive started a outboard fund. here
some of the insights I've gained from a trip to hobartand talking to
owners on boats.
Many people started with 4.5,6 &8 hp 2strokes as the boat needed
only to travel at hull speed. after a season they eventually met
somebody who let them try out a honda 2.5 4stroke. they would then
sell the other engineto another new boatbuilder as the ideal motorfor
their boat, and go and buy a honda. main reason was low down grunt.
The motor was mainly used when conditions got really horrible and
they wanted to down sail and run for shelter . If there was no wind
almost every body was happy to float aruond
By the way , whilst in hobart I drooled over the only Bolger boat
there , a stunning strip built row boat which was built by someone
going by the name of Tyson.Hed also built toomany other Bolgers for
his kids. I only met the man for a few minutes. i the tyson on the
list at present the builder or the lucky son?
Cheers all paul

The one on the Bolger group lists is one of the "Lucky sons"!!!!!
Being reffered to as a kid though sounds a bit strange at the age of 35 !!!!! Oh well.
My father (Bruce Tyson) is currently building a Bolger designed "Harbinger" 15' x7'1'' Cat Boat as featured in "The Folding Schooner" book. The boat he had at the Hobart Wooden Boat show was the 13'6'' "Recreational Row Boat" featured in the same book.
He's also built a "Romp" design from "Different Boats" book by Bolger as well as a "Chebacco 20" sheet Ply version and currently owns "Merlin" which he built and launched in 1998 and is featured in an article or two in MAIB magazines as well the design being in "BWAOM" under the chapter "Marina Cruiser".
Also he has built a few "Elegant Punts" a "Teal" ,a "Diablo" plus a number of other designers craft. We plan to start building a custom Bolger design "torpedo stern'' runabout sometime next year when Bolger finishes the plans!!!!.The design name for this runabout, which is based on "Snow Leopard" from "BWAOM" is "Silver Blaze".She'll be a bit smaller than the "Snow Leopard" being 26'0" x 6'6" with around 150HP in the form of an air-cooled Porsche motor(If we can get one for a reasonable price that meets our budget requirements) for a top speed of around 40 Knots.
