[bolger] Re: Cat Ketch Zephyr

Others have mentioned Jinni, which is probably better suited. If you
still want Zephyr's narrow beam for speed, think about the old
sharpie trick of a second forward maststep for a single sail when
things get blowing too hard.

I think the Zephyr is a fine choice for an experimental hull. And the
above suggestion would just about seal the deal if I was having the
same thought.

Build it and post pictures of the results!

If you are still considering Zephyr as a cat-ketch, PCB himself would
probably not recommend exceeding the designed 81 sq ft.

I had a similar intent a few years back and in his reply he mentioned
concerns about its fine ends and tenderness. If I remember correctly,
he was even second-guessing himself about using the amount of sail he
originally designed.

Others have mentioned Jinni, which is probably better suited. If you
still want Zephyr's narrow beam for speed, think about the old
sharpie trick of a second forward maststep for a single sail when
things get blowing too hard.

Thanks, Peter. That's a handy calculator.

Bill
How about a Light Schooner with two 59 sq ft leg o'mutton rigs (from Teal,
Cartopper, etc.)?

I think the Zephyr is a reasonable choice. It gives good size for
little material, the sails will be fairly small, and the hull has
enough capacity so that it won't be too far out of trim no matter
where you have to sit.

You can use my sail area calculator to design the rig:

Thanks for the input, guys. But I'm more interested in a cat ketch
rig than the cat yawls you've suggested. Cat ketch examples would be
CLC's John's Sharpie
(www.clcboats.com/boats/sharpie.php/cart_id=e9f48648613492111a2f3594fb
0f6c69/) and Bateau's CK17 (www.bateau.com/plans/sail/CK17_study.htm)
B&B Yachts has a very good explanation of why a cat ketch rig makes
sailing easy and fun (www.bandbyachtdesigns.com/catketch.htm)

Jinni. 16ft cat ketch sharpie.

Featherwind skiff ("$200 Sailboat) - contact Dave Carnell who has
PCB's permission to sell plans and they're only $20.

Bill,

Do you mean the cat-ketch or the trademark cat-yawl? If it's really a sail at either end
that has your interest, another quick and easy one designed for the latter is the 16' x 4' Jinni.

I'd like to sail a cat ketch rig, and am looking for a hull that will
be fast and quick & easy to build. Since my fascination with this

and money on a hull. Bolger's Zephyr looks like it just might be the

Any thoughts? Can anyone suggest another Bolger design that already
has a cat ketch rig and meets the above criteria?
