One very good reason to build your own boat is to have one you can lift.
If you make your own out of plywood it can weigh a whole lot less than
one made of fiberglass that doesn't have expensive enhancements like
foam core or exotic materials like Kevlar. Also, if you have to buy a
4X4 to tow, I wonder if it wouldn't STILL be cheaper (not counting your
labor) to build a plywood boat and tow with existing car. This is all
apart from issues of uniqueness.
I've also noted that most 20' and larger glass sailboats put all the
people in the back so they can have big accomodations. You end up
spending your time in a small part of the boat.
