Re: [Bolger3] Bolger Power Cruising Sharpies
I'm going to cross post to Bolger, it gets lots more traffic than Bolger3.
I think Champlain is specced for a 10 HP outboard. I wouldn't bother with
the trouble or expense of buying two equal motors. Figure on about three to
three and half grand each for new 10 horse 9.9 4 strokes with controls.
Unless you are really out in the wilderness, meaning *days* away from the
nearest mechanic, then I'd be satisfied with a single outboard and a VHF to
call for help.
If you've just *got* to have a "limp home" motor, then I'd suggest putting a
cheapie 4 horse on one side of the transom with an arm that will steer it
off of the main motor. You could even use the 4 HP to power your dink and
use it as a yawlboat should your main engine become disabled.
FWIW, my 4 stroke Merc 15 has been extremely reliable. It starts on the
first pull, even after sitting a month. That is as long as I've remembered
to set the kill switch to 'run'!

Subject: [Bolger3] Bolger Power Cruising Sharpies
| Hi All -
| In gathering info for my Bolger Champlain project we find that the
| subject of Outboard Motors can start to get complicated. The study
| plan for the 23' "Champlain" shows a single OB but I can't quite
| make out the size. It appears to be about a 20HP unit.
| Now we have made the decision to go for 4 cycle motors and would
| like to use two (2). I believe there will be room for them both,
| connected together to some off the shelf remote steering. The choice
| of two OB's is really the result of my very limited ability to
| repair them so if one conks out the other will carry us thru that
| crowded anchorage, narrow bridge opening or just to be able to carry
| on home. Our problem now is what HP for each and how much added
| weight can we carry at the transom. I don't think it would be right
| to go to 2 10HP units because I've been told we would have to run
| them both at full revs most of the time. So would 15's be the
| answere or can that transom hold 2 20's. Most of our cruising will
| be around the Intercoastal, Biscane Bay and the west coast of
| Florida. Next thing --- what does experience show to be the best
| brands to go for as many seem to be made by the same manufacturer.
| I've seen Mercury's made in the USA and also made in Japan with the
| Tohatso label on the inside. Magazine write-ups are very deceptive
| and according to them their all the best thing since sliced bread.
| Thanks for your input - Jack Spoering
