As far as Yahoo is concerned, bugger 'em. They certainly don't own

I'm off to peruse the index some more. Nice job.

Had a short visit to your prototype. Wow, what a treat. I love it. All

To clear the air a little. David has suggested that was an ulterior motive
for my posting about doing a CD, i.e. the "profit motive". As some of you
may know from this thread, I produced a CD of about 600 images of Columbia
Yachts about 2-3 years ago. Now there are 732 Columbia members on Yahoo,
another 200-400 on Sailnet and more on the Sailboatowners site. That's
roughly equivalent to the number of Bolger folks here. So, out of that total
potential market, I've sold exactly 47 CDs since it was produced, farther
from breaking even that I thought. Still, there are images of Columbia's
there that are no longer on the web, so the idea of making a CD is still
valid, whether for profit(?) or not.

Profit or non-profit, the image maker holds the rights to the image, artwork
or drawings. It would be much easier to get permission from the photo owners
to display their pictures than for PB&F drawings.

But David, I didn't "offer". I simply suggested another alternative.
Collecting over 600 images turned out to be a massive job, the least of
which was collecting and arranging the photos. Remember, the images belong
to the person taking the image, whether it is on the web or a hard copy
photo. It can't legally be distributed without the permission of the image
owner. After about two or three years, the CD is close to breaking even but
not there yet.

Another interesting point, is that there
is a rather large demand for a Bolger
catalog. PB&F are not interested in
producing one any time soon.
I see either some entrepreneur putting one
out, or some public interest group doing
the same. Commercial versus academic. Or,
perhaps 'dot com' versus 'dot org', Bill
Gates versus GPL.
I think that USA copyright laws gives a
lot of leeway to academic/nonprofit use
of published materials, that it does not
grant to commercial use. Therefore, it
seems that a not for profit, 'study group'
like ours would be in a legitimate position
to create a Bolger cataloge for acadamic and
for critical purposes. [where a for-profit
entity might not.]

I thought up another disadvantage:
- what happens if the moderator (me) gets hit by a bus? Then all of
those photos dissapear.
The way to solve that is to make it group owned. You get a domain
name like boatbuilderarchive.org or bolgerfanclub.org and have five or
ten people authorized to make changes and keep it running. Similar to
the way most local clubs operate.

I got sick and tired of always poking around through the bolger,
bolger2 and bolger3 files and photo folders to find a picture or
sketch. It also irritates me that the images are all resized. So I
downloaded them all and built a tree structured album that is
searchable. I will periodically check to add more as photos are
added. I mostly organized them according to the taxonomy: designer -
design - builder
I agree with recent posts that we shouldn't do anything to dilute this
awesome discussion group. I did this for myself so I haven't wasted
any effort yet. But I am willing to spend an extra few hours to put
it on the web if the group feels it is worth it. By the way, I have a
hosting vendor that gives me 500M storage for $5/month
(http://www.myvaluehost.com), so I wouldn't have that *lame* 20M
folder limit.
Advantages:
- its searchable
- it doesn't shrink photos
- anyone can create their own account to upload photos
- 500M storage
- photos albums are mostly organized by designer - design - builder by
the moderator(s) (that would be me and any volunteers)
- you don't have to be a yahoo group member to view the files - anyone
can view them. No one can modify them except for the owner and the
moderator
- I created custom fields for things like owner, date launched,
location, ...
- there is one archive not many - it fixes the "where is it? is it on
the bolger6 file archive or on bolger4 photo archive?"
Disadvantages:
- doesn't use yahoo groups ID
- dilutes the bolger photo and file archive - someone will say "where
is it? is it on the bolger6 file archive or on that other archive that
frank set up"
My personal prototype (temporarily available - only a few days) is
available at
http://68.32.137.104/gallery2
I haven't finished loading all of the files yet.
Again, I built the database just for my own benefit but I am willing
to share it. I just don't want to spend the time to put it on the
internet if the group consensus is "not needed" or "don't do it"
If there is enough interest, I'll move to the next step which is to
make sure it its legally ok to do. I read "Yahoo Terms of Service"
and that doesn't pose any problems, but would still have to check.
