Re: BOLGER.COM

Do you mean the Micro Navigator?
If you cold mold her, you end up with an inferior home-made plywood!
I have built 3 cold molded boats (2 of them one catamaran), and love
the construction, but only for round bilge designs.

Hi Kris,

All the Bolger "boxes" are specifically drawn up to be built from
plywood. It would not make much sense to cold mold one and would cost
far more than using plywood.

No the Spartina would be relatively easy to build compared to Haven 12-1/2.Someone with reasonable(Not expert!) boat building skills and the time should be able to build one complete in about 3 months!.-Clinker Ply sides and a flat bottom and fairly easy sectional shapes.

Hi Bruce,
BWAOM,chapter 22,pg.106..............

peter Lenihan
Mr Bolger wrote up Spartina in MAIB some years ago. Sorry I can't
quote the date.

I am unfamiliar with Spartina,
where is the PCB write up, and/or
pictures?
I would suggest going here and looking at a couple other choices as
well:

http://instantboats.com/

Catfish Beachcruiser is three feet longer than Bobcat/Tinycat and
Bolger mentions it is much more boat and I believe he has designed a
cuddy concept for it. Plans are $40 same as for Bobcat. Also it has a
completely open cockpit with no C/b case. Neat, relaxed small party
boat with camping accomodations for two.

One caveat I would suggest is the longer boom on Beachcruiser makes
it more of a handful and somewhat dangerous if some of your friends
get careless:-)

A split rig is therefore much more relaxed and easier to handle I
would say - which leads one to Chebacco. Plans at $60 are an absolute
steal.

And there is even a link to her own website?

The cat yawl sail plan is one of Bolgers great gifts to the world of
messing about in boats I would say:-)

I wonder what the area of the Chebacco mainsail is - compared to
Beachcruiser?

So many boats.....Nels

Having built neither I'm not the authority here, but I suggest Spartina in more than just a little larger than Bobcat. An extra foot here or there can make a lot of difference. Some years ago Bolger pointed out to me that the Jochems Schooner, at only 2' longer and about 1.5' wider than Birdwatcher is in fact 4 times the size of Birdwatcher. I suspect Spartina is at least twice the size of Bobcat overall. These differences seem to become exponential in terms of material and costs. Spartina is a dazzlingly beautiful boat, but from my humble perspective, building one starts to move into the range of projects like Joel White's Haven 12.5. If more room for crew/companionship is the main issue, I recommend considering Gypsy, also tack and tape (or stitch and glue) like Bobcat.
