[bolger] Re: Rantings about Rigs
I get almost as much daydreaming pleasure out of 100 SMALL BOAT RIGS as
I do
from BOATS WITH AN OPEN MIND.
For those of us who already own the first book, any chance of getting
copies of the additional (Chinese gaff?) chapters for a modest fee?

Bolgerafficionados,
What about rigs? Sprit, boom sprit, gaff, lug, junk, lateen and what
about
the sloop rig? How come the Bolger boats most of us have built do not
use a
sloop rig? Is it because all the other rigs are stayless?
How do you judge a rig:
- On how it goes to weather
- How easy it is to rig and drop
- Cost
- How it contributes to the stability of the boat
Based on these criteria (and any other that folks who know more about
this
than me) how do you rank the rigs you have used?
As some of you may recall, I built a Windsprint which uses a lug sail
of
about 115 sq. ft. I have found it unwieldy and other builders have
cautioned
my about how easy the Windsprint is to dump with the full sail up and
how
difficult it can be to recover. So I have built a poly sail lateen
rig. It is
about 75 sq. ft. Haven't sailed with it yet but will let you all know.
I am
also interested in trying the standard boom sprit rig used on most
of the
Bolger instant boats. Last but not least, I may try a sloop rig.
Anyway, what do you think?
