[bolger] Re: martha jane rudder conflicts ( renamed)
Reply to Steve Anderson,
I have done a lot of things to my Martha Jane only to undo them and decide
the original was best. But the motor mount idea is a good one and has
lasted. See, if you raise the transom, or hang a rudder amidships, you lose
your best ingress/egress.
But for other reasons I am very interested in your transom hung arrangement.
I wish I could get details from you.
Yes, it's a 2hp Honda 4 stroke. Adequate? Yes, with nothing to spare. It
comes close to hull speed, say, 6k wide open, but you shouldn't run wide
open more than a half hour. Subtract a knot or two in strong headwinds. But
hey why aren't you sailing when the wind's up?
I bought my first engine in 1960 (5hp) and bought my second engine in 1998,
and I have done plenty of cruising and daysailing in between. Why? I ran up
the river to Fredericksburg (Virginia) and back, narrow waters, on half
throttle at about 4k, burned 2-1/2 gals of petroleum derivative in 70 miles,
sailed 35. I need power to make neat trips like that.

I have heard of another martha jane owner who had this problem ( that makes
two confirmed whom I know of with the outboard and rudder door hitting each
other, that is) and solved it by adding six inches to the transom height and
using a longshaft outboard.
I was on Bennett's Steadfast last spring and wasn't in a shallow water
situation - Perhaps he's still on this list and can say if Steadfast has this
"conflict".
As for Landroval - I avoided this completely when I went with a transom hung
rudder. Apparantly I saved a lot of money in stainless steel fabrication as
well - since I only spent $250 in this catagory. The only stainless steel I
needed to have fabricated was the tabernacle hinge ( $200) and some
modifications to the pintles - $45.
It will be interesting to see what Mr. Bolger's new rudder design for MJ
looks like.
I was interested in your comment Ed that you moved your outboard to a motor
mount. Are you the one who is using a 2 hp honda? If so how adequate has it
been in strong winds and against tidal current? Will it push the boat
against a four knot current?

I was on Bennett's Steadfast last spring and wasn't in a shallow water
situation - Perhaps he's still on this list and can say if Steadfast has this

I was interested in your comment Ed that you moved your outboard to a motor

been in strong winds and against tidal current? Will it push the boat
against a four knot current?
