Re: [bolger] Re: WINDERMERE update, photo alert.

Thanks Peter -

I'm glad that I won't have to need a forward CB on Champlain, I've built too many of them in the past.....
Sounds like Mr B has done his magic again with those fillet pieces, I'll stay very close to his plans.

It's not the heat but the humidity that kills me down here - a couple of big fans should make things workable.

Pig manure? Build a bonfire
and roast the pig too.

Hi Peter,

The "standard technique" you mention sounds like a perfect
recipe for making friends and influencing enemys :-).....But
unfortunately the folks at the boat yard will not think too highly
of me having a truck load of manure delivered and then there is
always the question of what do you do with all that crap come spring
time? The yard is all gravel................
Thanks anyways!

dissappearing arts of the farmer.....

Hi John,
No need to wait for things to come to a halt:-)
Regarding your first question, I can only conclude that based on
both ,published reports from PCB&Fs and in talking with Han Van Pelt
(CHAMPLAIN owner/builder of"MUDLARK") at the recent Kingston
Messabout, the twin skegs cured the handling vices first mentioned by
the prototype builder of FENNESTRA.Considering CHAMPLAINS shorter
LOA,I cannot readily see any direct advantages considering the work
involved to modify and install a proper centerboard. Perhaps the
best advice would be to write PCB&Fs,elaborating your desire for a
canterboard and see what they say.
The fillet pieces on WINDERMERE are intended to be filled with
expanding foam once completed. The shape, however,of the fillet pieces
are arrived at through bending in place the plywood which the
designer has fully expanded on the plans. It is a case of one of
those tricky developed surface things. When you arrive at that stage
with your CHAMPLAIN,you'll be tickled pink by the "magic" way a
previously flat plywood panel will suddenly bend into a beautiful
curves-in-two-directions-at-once shape. I know I was :-) The
centerboard on WINDERMERE is located about 9 feet from the stem
(sorry but I don't have the plans in front of me)

Hope this helps John and try not to be too discouraged by the
heat you're experiencing down in the Sunshine state:-)

Sincerely,

Peter Lenihan
Hi Peter -

I wonder when your stormed-in and work on Windermere grinds to a holt, if you can answere two questions that have occured to me as I look over Windermere and Champlain study plans.

1. - would it be worthwhile to add a forward off-centerboard to Champlain, Say alongside the seat opposite the steering station. How far back from the bow is Windermeres'

2. - Is there anything inside the fillets for the forward box keel/bottom joint to give it a convex curved form.
Do you think it would be wise to fill it with "pour-in-place" marine foam?

I thought that the standard technique was to heap a huge pile of
manure along the north-facing wall. It provides heat of decomposition
plus protection from the wind.

Thank you John for your kind words and encouragement:-)
If keeping a photo scrapbook will help move your CHAMPLAIN project
forward,by all means go for it. Just keep in mind that the CHAMPLAIN
may go together somewhat differently then how I happen to be doing
WINDERMERE ;-)

> In my effort to gather all the info for our project that I
can I wrote to Bob Hicks of MAIB and was able to buy from him the 2
articles on "Champlain" that he published. It was interesting to
note that PB&F have added twin fins, one on either side of the motor
well to help keep her tracking properly (you have your centerboard,
and she now has the forward fillet around the box-keel/bottom joint
just as "Windermere" .

Indeed,after some real-world feedback from CHAMPLAIN owners,PCB&Fs
have added elements which should enhance further CHAMPLAINS already
remarkable handling characteristics. WINDERMERE also has twin skeds
plus a centerboard. I believe that WINDERMERES centerboard will be a
fabulous asset in low speed/tight quarter cross wind handling
situations as often found in most marina/yacht club basins.PCB&Fs
also assert that a centerboard placed like so will also allow for
better straight line tracking when the boat is up to speed.
After seeing how those beautiful fillet pieces soften an otherwise
harsh transition between boxkeel and hull bottom,in real life, I just
know that the water will absolutely love hugging those curves as she
slides along and that the waves at night will be gently soothed by
those same curves too.A good sign for a quite night sleep:-) I would
solidly encourage you to install the fillet pieces on your CHAMPLAIN,
when the time comes John.

As for heating of my as yet unfinished bow shed, I'm going to have to
wait and see just how warm it actually gets inside on a bright
winters day.Already, I have recieved suggestions,off group, for a)el
cheapo wood stove to burn the scaps,b) electric base board heaters
and c) propane heat/blower as used on construction sites up here.
Winter will not win this year :-)

I can send you down a poster of snow covered streets to hang in
your"shop" and remind you that,"heck,hot,humid and 80 degrees ain't
so bad.Afterall,it could be worse! :-D

Hi Peter -

I have to tell you that the last set of pictures you posted of "Windermere" were just great and I hope you don't mind but I making copies and keeping a scrapbook so that I'll wind up with a photo essay that Barbara & I can follow as we build our "Champlain". Also, now I have a photo of you so I know who I'm talking to.

Don't freeze up there. Can you put some kind of a space heater in that bow shed your building? It may be a nice 80 degrees down here in Florida but after all the rain we've had the humidity is so high nobody wants to go outside for work. Guess I still (after 25 years here) have too much New York State Yankee blood in me. Would you be willing to post the plans for your bow shed on Bolger 3, I seem to remember seeing them in a how-to articles in a way back issue of Woodenboat Mag some years ago, I'll try to find it in my old copies.

In my effort to gather all the info for our project that I can I wrote to Bob Hicks of MAIB and was able to buy from him the 2 articles on "Champlain" that he published. HI all -

I know (Peter) that we're still having "too humid to work, 80+ degree days down here in Ft Lauderdale" and we've also had a month of rain nearly every day. But how I envy your not having a big fouling problem up there. The last boat I built I finished off with "Trinidad" super grade anti-fouling but still, if I didn't get under her (she was kept on a mooring) every month she would grow oysters.

Yahoo doesn't seem to encourage their
groups to share photos all that much.

Another option is Webshots, a free, banner
ad supported website. I haven't used it
enough to know if there are any gotcha's
but it seems logical that photos could be
stored there, and we could use the 'links'
feature of the Bolger Yahoo group to point
to the Bolger galleries stored on Webshots.

see, for instance:

I must second Hugo's post; I, too, was denied membership in Bolger 2 despite

at one point (or perhaps I unknowingly crossed that invisible line, like the

Its not so easy joining Bolger2. I tried and my membership was "pending" for

reason was given!!!!!!.

I'll try to join Bolger 3 and see how I go.

Hi Hugo,
Bolger2 and Bolger3 were intended to contain the over-flow of
files and photos from the"NORMAL" Bolger group. Joining it is
easy, you can adjust the settings so as to not be overwhelmed with
mail etc....
However, I have just added a few to the PHOTOS section of the
main(normal)(this) Bolger group for you to peak at and also just
found out that we are a little over 29mb(?) and thus close to our 30
mb limit. In otherwords, new material will have to go into BOLGER2
and BOLGER3.

Hi Frank,
Good question! Presently I am compelled to leave it as
is,primer only. This is an epoxy based high build primer which cures
with a slight gloss and as such does not necessarily require any
paint over it.
Based on my observations, where I keep my boats, and their flat
bottoms, I have yet to ever experience fouling underneath the
hull, only along the sides up to the waterline. Once the sides are
installed, I will apply anti-fouling from the waterline down to the
edge of the bottom.
During the course of talking with a few folks, I have met
with a mixed bag of suggestions regarding the use of anti-fouling
paint in this case. Some swear by it,even where the sun don't shine,
while others clearly see no real world need for it.
Being the kind of nut I am, I may paint anyway despite the
wonderfully toxic soup I usually do my boating in.
I like red bottom :-)

Sincerely,

Peter Lenihan

Hi Bolgerados!
With winter closing in seriously for us unfortunate Northern
Nuts, things have slowed down a fair bit at my all-out-doors-all-the-
time-boat-shop. The month of October was something of a record
breaker here in Montreal. According to Environment Canada,we
experienced the least amount of sunlight( for an October),the
coolest temperatures and the most precipitation since records were
kept. No wonder I was having a hard time getting things done:-(

The good news however,is that this sorry excuse for a
climate has greatly encouraged me to skip any half measures and go
straight to building a bow-shed. As I mentioned in an earlier
posting, a fellow group member kindly sent me the needed details
for building my own and to this end,I have begun. With any kind of
luck, the basic structure should be up and functioning by the end of
the month.

For those keen on looking at pictures, I have added about a
dozen more over in the files section of our photo library aka
BOLGER3.

This link should work:

to posting some"cool" pictures during the winter months :-)

Hope y'all enjoys the pictures :-)
