Re: [bolger] How much weight does fibreglassing add?

Visit System Three athttp://www.systemthree.com/index_2.asp
Muck about in Products to find their General Purpose Resin, then down in the
lower left corner, click to get "The Epoxy Book" in pdf format.

In the Physical Characteristics, you'll find the nominal density is 8.8
lbs/gallon for mixed resin/hardener.

Further on you'll find:
ESTIMATING USAGE
The following will serve as a guide for estimating the amount of epoxy you'
ll need. The key to any estimate is a reasonably accurate idea of the
surface area involved. The numbers given are in square feet of coverage per
gallon of mixed resin and hardener except as noted. Divide by 40 to convert
figures to square meters per liter.

Coating Wood First Coat Subsequent Coats
Softwood Plywood/Veneer 250 400 sq. ft. per gallon
Hardwood Plywood/Veneer 325 400
Vertical Surface-max. non-sag 500 500

Fiberglassing (sealer, wet-out & fill coats)
4 ounce cloth 150 300
6 ounce cloth 130 250
10 ounce cloth 100 170
Biaxial Tape 32 40 sq. ft.
per gallon

Since there are no solvents to evaporate, the liquid and cured weights ought
to be pretty close.

West System, in their book, The G'n Brothers on Boatbuilding give similar
tables.

I used way too much glass and epoxy on the dinghy I built and ended up at
100 lbs instead of the designer's 80 lbs.

In my Batam upgrade build, I would like to glass the exterior, at
minimum the hulls, say 6 oz cloth on mostly 6mm plywood. I am not
worried about planning, and at displacement speeds, I think the
weight of the fibreglassing is worth the increased surface stability
of the wood (no zippers) and some strength as well. Can anyone hazard
a guess on how to calculate the weight gain? Opinions welcome.
