Re: [bolger] Re: Cut down Birdwatcher
I agree, there's nothing wrong with a big, double ended, open sailing skiffs but "Birdwatcher's" main feature is the unique type of 'cabin' which makes them quite safe and self-righting and eliminates the prospect of bailing out a swamped hull in the event of a knockdown.

Here here!
One of the great things about Bolger's straight sided hulls is how
quickly you can bang on together as a platform for whatever bad idea
has seized your fevered brain.
Of course, I'd never want to bail out a swamped BW hull!

building the rudder/tiller set up as in the plans? And the off
centerboard?
An open BIRDWATCHER is really only an enlarged WINDSPRINT.
Why not put a small "Birderwatcher" house on a WINDSPRINT?
Chop off both ends and you have a minature WHALEWATCHER.
Or connect two together and you have a fair sized cat that sleeps two
or even maybe four if you are really motivated:-)
Or tie a Payson Pirogue on each side and you have a Tri that carries
two canoes.
Or you can go to the Michalak website and see that all this has
probably aready been done!
Cheers, Nels

How do I really feel ? What sort of question is that?. I feel pretty good in general so to speak !!
About a cut down "Birdwatcher" ? I think its a really stupid idea and shouldn't be done. One way to spoil an interesting and useful boat !

No I don't know where to find that picture of a "Cut-down" Birdwatcher, but
what a stupid thing to do to the design, it negates the purpose of building
a Birdwatcher by removing the 'cabin' and it would make the design unsafe as
she wouldn't be self-righting anymore. I'm sure Bolger would really
disapprove of this, especially as "Birdwatcher" is one of his favourite
designs and concepts! (I read that somewhere, but can't remember where.)
Are you absolutely sure its a cut-down "Birdwatcher" not some other craft
with a hull like "Birdwatcher"'s minus the 'cabin' topsides ?
I'd also like to see this 'disaster' modification just to laugh at it and
find out why it was built/modified like it.

It was in MAIB a while back, in one of the 'Kokopelli' write-ups. The boat
was significantly modified. The after part of the house had been cut off
making an open cockpit. It also had a sloop rig taken off of some defunct
day sailer hull. It was not pretty, to say the least.
