Re: finish bright....
Verrrry Interesting,
I recall the name Steven Wilce - It was called Navigator? Was it a
sharpie with a centerboard?
How tall are the spars and what size and type is the mainsail? Does
it require stays?
This type of finish is used on a lot of small boats in Norway and
Denmark - and other woodwork too. It really preserves the wood and is
very beautiful as you say.
Any photos sir?
Cheers, Nels

Some twenty years ago, I had Steve Wilce of Davis CA build me one of his
Navigator" 20' cat-yawls from his fascinating lightweight boatbuilding
technology (a kydex (sheet thermoplastic) / foam / kydex sandwich, stiffened
with embedded aluminum square-tube frame... go see article on his boats way
back in Small Boat Journal). Well anyway, he finished the clear douglas fir
spars and mast and gunwales AND even mahogany marine plywood seats with a
FLOOD product called "Deks Olje" -- more like a teak-oil, but also worked
well on fir. The companion wood-cleaning product called "Deks Rens", used
before next-season application of additional coats of Deks Olje, was a bit
aggressive to the softer grain (don't scrub hard) BUT turned the fir a
gorgeous deep mahogany-red -- absolutely stunning! Deks Olje required a
replenishing coat partway thru the season, but easy to apply.
I'd recommend this two-part process: Deks Rens to remove graying and clean
out the wood's pores (ang give that glorious color), then a couple of coats
of Deks Olje to preserve and seal the cleaned wood.
Give it a try on a scrap of YOUR wood-species first, before committing.
By the way, I STILL have the rig off that boat (sold the hull to a rowing
enthusiast) -- always have had it in the back of my mind to commission Phil
to quick-design (or modify an existing design) -- probably some simple
sharpie hull to take the rig
