Hey, I used to have one of those! Loved it. Hauled kayaks on it alot, it was
very stoutly built. I miss the days when cars had character like that.

Having the boat(s) as long as the vehicle can be an advantage, both
loading and tying down.
I have made frames of 2X4 to extend the distance between hull supports
when using quick and easy racks on sedans. The extrension frames attached
to the 2X4 cross bars.
It is critical that the boats are secured to the vehicle directly, not
just the racks. This should be done with two lines to each bumper (to give
directional stability and with perhaps the added safety of a "NRS" type
strap (webbing with cam buckle) over the boat and through the doors (doors
open, then closed).
This has worked with two 18.5' canoes on a saab 96 (yes 3 cylinders-two
cycle), 20' grummans on pickups and single sculls on caravans, as well as
Penquins, 420's and a Finn (the Finn was not done a second time).
When flight planning, it helps to be aware that gas milage will
deteriorate - as I found out when I stretched a tankfull too far.
All things being equal, I'd rather cartop than trailer.

Good Luck in FLorida - Ken Meyer, still in Maine
