Fair would be pretty much what the owner is asking. It may only become
unfair if you can demonstrably build the same boat, with the same
materials and standard of finish for less and count your time/his
time as worthless. At that point, you haggle/argue it out with the
seller and convince him.Of course,if you are in a situation which
makes it impossible to build THAT boat, combined with a keen enough
desire to have THAT exact boat, then it becomes a moot question.Cough
up the dough and have a happy time on the water sooner rather then
later:-)

$1600 sounds like a reasonable price for a Gypsy extremely well built of
marine ply and sheathed in fibreglass if it also includes rig and sail.
Maybe a bit steep if sail rig is not included. Look carefully, from near
stern and bow, at the lines of the seams between panels. If they are truly
fair curves, she's probably worth the price. If there's a kink here and
there she'll probably still sail and row alright, but should only cost about
half what's being asked. Gypsy is a graceful, elegant little boat that's a
delight to handle and behold. Good luck.
jeb, with way too many boat building resolutions for the new year already,

Seems a little pricey. Maybe that's how much he figures he has in it
in labor and materials.
Look on ebay for comparison but I purchased an oday 20 for less than
that.
Good luck.

I didn't say I'd be willing to pay that, but the truth is I can't
build one myself any time soon.
I've no garage, and no room elsewhere. SWMBO isn't going to let me
build in the yard unless/until I build or buy an attractive "boat
shed" to keep things in. (We're talking wood building here -- no
plastic or canvas.) 8 by 18 is about the maximum the available space
would allow.
I'm thinking about putting in a nice pre-fab shed but that
isn't going to happen till mid-summer at the earliest.
So if I want to do a lot of daysailing this summer, I need to buy
something.
And hey, you didn't answer the question: if building one wasn't an
option, how much would you be willing to pay for a nice used Gypsy?

The current issue of WoodenBoat has an ad for a Bolger Gypsy in
Maryland, less than an hour's drive for me. The boat was built in
2001 using marine fir sheathed in epoxy (with a layer of glass
outside) and wasn't in the water in 2003. Owner says it's in great

I was hoping to build a boat this winter (not a Bolger boat, I'm
afraid), but that's looking unlikely at this point, so I'm thinking
about buying something.
