Re: OT: Warm Water Get Away

To be slightly more helpful, my wife and I did spend a week in PR
about 30 years ago, and enjoyed it a lot. One of the things that
struck me was the time scale with respect to history. American
history in New Englad started in 1620 and didn't really interesting
until 1765. PR had a century of history behind it before 1620, and
you already know the name of many of the players.

I've spent several weeks in the lower keys over the past 10 years. Great
thin-water boating - we always bring our folding kayak & sail rig and use it
every day. It's nice but in-town it can be so crowded and expensive that
it's hard to feel that far away from it all, and the beaches are not
spectacular in the lower keys at least.

We went to PR last February for the first time, and were bowled over by the
people there - without a doubt the most gracious, friendliest people I've
ever met anywhere. Having lived in S. America, and not one to go for the
protective bubble of resorts and such, I've come to expect that I'll bumble
into uncomfortable situations from time to time, meet people who dislike or
are wary of gringos, etc. but everywhere we went folks bent over backwards
to help us. Incredibly charming place, didn't meet a single grumpy or even
indifferent person in 11 days, and it all seemed genuine and sincere.

The island is nice - a perfect mix of tropical, foreign country attitudes,
with US convenience. There is something for everyone - Old SJ oozes culture
and history; there is the rainforest, there is that giant antenna of
SETI/'Contact' fame whose name escapes me, and there are endless beaches
with great snorkelling. It's big enough to have a bit of everything, small
enough to still feel like an island, and tropical enough to be a welcome
break from our northern winters. We did alot of diving, and the water was
warm and clear, with temps in the high 70's. It was sunny and warm every day
we were there, but we were told we got lucky to have sun EVERY day for 11
days.

We did two trips outside of greater SJ - one to Aguadilla on the western tip
of the island, for an overnight and a beach dive; the other was 3 nights on
the island of Vieques, in the town of Esperanca on the south shore. Lovely
little hideout; its claim to fame is the local 'biobay', (see
http://www.biobay.com/). I highly recommend it - I'd seen lots of
bioluminescence before but this is a genuine natural wonder. Neat electric
pontoon boat to carry you out and back (there, a boat mention - not
completely off topic!) or you can rent kayaks from the other outfit in town.
Esperanca is tiny, not alot to do once you've seen the biobay, but we
revelled in our tropical boredom, swimming, snorkelling, napping in the sun,
strolling by the ballfield to watch girls' baseball practice after dinner...
a real throwback kinda place. I'm told Culebra is also very nice, but
busier. Avoid weekends on these little islands if you want maximum
relaxation...

We loved it - we've had tickets for months to go back down there in
February, for 2 weeks!

FBBB,

My wife and I have decided that if we don't get some sun, warm
weather and warm water we're going to have to do a suicide pact.

Anyone got any tips on PR or South Florida?

TIA,

David

It's a long way to PR. If you consider going there, you should surely
consider all the Lesser Antilles.

If after your Florida getaway you still feel like committing harikari,
be sure to stop in Boca Raton and blow it up. That's where most of the
world's spam email comes from.
