Re: Bolger's Laser

A few years ago I built a Gypsy. I'm a live-aboard boater in the San Francisco Bay area. The Encinal Yacht Club is
just up the Oakland estuary about a half mile from my marina. The first time I sailed Gypsy, Encinal was holding a
Laser racing class with about a dozen boats and sailing around a mile long course. An observer in a Zodiac keeping
an eye on the action.

Being a friendly guy and interested in testing Gypsy's performance compared to these serious racers, I sailed into
the pack going around the first mark.

As I passed the lead boat I waved a friendly greeting, but the girl, who was hiked way out and getting a bit wet in
the proccess, didn't seem amused to see me sail by, sitting upright and drinking a Snapple.

Gypsy was faster than the Lasers, I (slowly) lapped the entire group. Considering it was the first time I sailed
her, and I'm no dinghy racer, I would imagine a more experienced sailer, not carrying a pair of 7 foot oars and a
small ice cooler, would be even faster.

Night and day faster then my old Dyer dink. Hope this is helpful.

Peter

I nominate Surf, though there could be no objection to either Gypsy
or Dart. Or Cartopper. Or Teal. Or the Coldwater Sailboard. Or
Junebug.

For a more complicated hull shape, Bolger did a Sandbagger that was
about 14-15' which might qualify, though it has a gaff rig and may be
designed for a couple crew on the rail.

There have not been too many Bolger designs that really encourage
aggressive hiking-out. He thinks you shouldn't have to work that hard.

Peter
Unless it is really really light, a Laser will KILL and Windsprint. Been
there, done that, spent a lot of time looking at the back end of a Laser.

| The Windsprint -- 50% more sail, two more feet of LOA, and fifty
| pounds lighter, but minus all the hiking and still singlehand-able.
| Plus,
| people actually race them.

Hi Bruce,
My feeling is that it would be the Dart Dinghy,BWAOM,pg.19.

Peter Lenihan
It's the Light Scooner. When I explain how she sails, I tell people
she's a 23' laser, schooner rigged!

YIBB,

David
