Re: Bolger trawler design

Hi -

"Boats with an Open Mind" describes the boat as being too short for an ocean
crossing.

Consider instead maybe Tahiti, Omega, or Thorfinn. Tahiti is documented in past
"messing about in BOATS" issues. For Omega and Thorfinn, see "Voyaging Under
Power" by Robert P. Beebe. I have the 1975 edition, which Phil recommends over the
newer ones. I bought it used off of Amazon last summer, so there are still copies out
there.

Hope that helps!

Mike

I agree with Peter's assesment. Bolger also says that she is "too
short" meaning, I assume that she would be pretty slow. He also
mentions about three days of holding on tight is about all one would
want to do without the paravane gear.

But if I were interested I would not hesitate to send him a fax with
your questions. I expect you might get a response suggesting another
design if you wanted to go offshore for any length of cruise.

SL is probably ideal for cruising the ICW although there is no
mention of it's intended usage anywhere that I can find. I saw a boat
with a hull almost exactly the same shape moored near the north
channel on Lake Huron. Will try to locate the photos.

Cheers, Nels

Upon reading the text,Bolger does seem to suggest that she is not
really suitable for ocean crossings. Not that it couldn't be done, mind
you,but alot would depend on how much hardship you would be willing
to put up with. She is "too stiff and not fast enough for hull
mounted anti-rolling fins to be effective". and also,"for real ocean
work she would need roll-dampening paravanes"........something of a
clutter according to Bolger.
The prescribed construction is plenty strong and the boat will always
come up-right after being rolled.........but some kayakes can do the
same thing too:-)
I haven't read any other information on SHADY LADY.

Sincerely,

Peter Lenihan
Could anyone tell me more about Bolger's 39' trawler, Shady Lady? I'm
trying to understand more about her suitability to an ocean-crossing.
Is her hull shape wrong for this?

Many thanks for any info you can share.
